Book Tour: Guest Post By Author Andrea Hintz!

Tell us about a favorite character from a book.

When it comes to a favorite character from a book…I would have to go with Darby Carter from the, “Phantom Stallion:  Wild Horse Island” series.  She was a strong, loveable, intelligent, and very brave YA character who felt very real.  I was about her age when I read the stories so I looked up to her.  Her character development over the series was incredibly fun to follow.  She went from a shy, city girl to a strong, determined ranch woman in Hawaii.

What made you want to become an author and do you feel it was the right decision?

I wanted to become an author because I have a very fast-paced head that’s always filled with stories, and this is my outlet.  It was most certainly the right decision.  Now I’m also finding that another outlet for this is screenwriting.

A day in the life of the author?

I have a normal job outside of writing.  I take a little time everyday working on my spirituality (reading Bible verses and praying), spending time with my family, and keeping up with the daily tasks of having a home.  At the end of the day, if I have a little down time, I work on marketing my books and writing.

Advice they would give new authors?

Everyone is subjective.  You can have one person tell you that your world building in your book was terrible, and the next person will say that the world building was their favorite part (go figure).  You also have to be open to constructive feedback.  Try not to get offended and really think about what was said.  If you really don’t agree with the advice, you don’t have to!  So it’s all about that perfect balance.  Just do what you know is good writing for your story.  Also, it’s always good to practice and hone your skills by writing and reading.  Also, please, please look up how to do a good book launch before you publish your first book.  I found that out much later in the game.  Start with a Google search on book launches.

Describe your writing style.

According to one of my reviewers, “The author keeps the reader glued to pages with a keen eye for detail and a taut writing style.”  I’m concise in my writing.

What makes a good story?

I feel like likeable characters are key to a good story.  I can read a book and the story and the main idea can be awesome, but if the character isn’t likeable or doesn’t become likeable by the end of the book, then I have a hard time relating.  That is my subjective opinion.

What are you currently reading?

My current read is, “Asbury High and the Thief’s Gamble” by Kelly Brady Channick.  It’s super awesome!

What is your writing process? For instance do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first?

I usually will write a very light outline but will add in a lot of storyline as I go along, and I don’t always follow the outline.  I usually don’t know how the book will end until I get there.

What are common traps for aspiring writers?

Feeling like writing a book is going to be too hard and you could never do it.  Trust me…if you have a story to tell, it’s not like writing an essay.  It’s like watching a really good movie.  And don’t worry about making it perfect right away.  This is a first draft.  Just get the ideas out.  Don’t worry about the sentence structure or how many times you start a sentence with, “I.”  If you get stuck on a scene, skip it and write it later.  You’ll be able to go back and change all of this later and more effectively.  The most important thing is to just get the ideas out.

Also, I think many aspiring writers worry about getting published.  There are plenty of avenues to publish your books that won’t cost you anything.  Kindle Direct Publishing and CreateSpace were my platforms!  Send out your query letters to agents.  Dream of making it big with HarperCollins or Scholastic.  I still do!  But also appreciate your self-publishing options in the meantime and know that the industry is changing and self-publishing has proven to be just as, if not more, effective than going with a larger publishing house.  But once you self-publish, prepare for the marketing.  That’s the hardest part.  Do your research, find other authors who were successful in self-publishing, network with them, and do what they do.

What is your writing Kryptonite?

I love having a fully charged laptop, a cozy room or couch, and a Friday night where I can type until 2am.  I get some great scenes out when I’m tired and my mind is looser hahaha.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

I try to be original and true to myself, although I’ve been pondering and weighing the pros and cons of writing what I want versus what’s popular in the world right now.  You have to do what feels right to you.  Never stray away from your values or beliefs for a story.  You don’t have to.  I always want to deliver what the readers want.  For example, I kept hearing positive feedback about Wolf and Juro’s characters.  Originally, I wasn’t sure how involved they were going to be for the remainder of the series, but once I heard that feedback from my readers, I continued involving the characters heavily into the storyline and developing them, which only made the readers love them even more.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

Don’t let your need to market overshadow your love of writing.  There are some days where I market and market but I’m not writing, and then I start to lose sight of why I’m doing it in the first place.  Marketing is important, but make time for creation.  It’ll refresh you and fuel your passion so you keep moving forward.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

I have to be honest, I don’t find any issues with writing male characters.  Maybe it’s because I grew up with brothers, so I was able to see firsthand how boys work and that their feelings aren’t all that different from girls.  We all want the same thing at the end of the day.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

If I stuck with a good schedule, I could probably write one in about two months.  But my life outside of writing is busy and I usually end up writing one book every six to twelve months (from first word to absolute final draft).  I think my record was a few weeks because I had some time off from work (that was, “Perception and Deception II”).

Do you believe in writer’s block?

Absolutely.  I’ve written about this topic online before.  I deal with writer’s block by taking a rest from my writing. Sometimes, you have to let the inspiration build up in your mind from your own life experiences.  And then suddenly, you wake up in the middle of the night with ten chapters worth of ideas! It’s very interesting how our minds work.

She has recently been sent to an extremely rural town called Toselville; playing the part of a young nature photographer. Everyone has their cliques in Toselville. As a twenty-one-year-old, she finds herself having to network with the younger people in town. Her mission: find the middle aged son of two weapons designers who created blueprints for the United States government. As time goes on, she befriends Ashton Mathis, the owner of the only grocery shop in town, and his best friend/employee. RLIP agents have partners who talk to them through their small earpieces that cannot be seen. These agents are not allowed to see their partners or even know their names. Felix has had many partners who are generally cold and over-professional. But Felix has been assigned to Wolf, an older gentleman who becomes a sort of wise father figure to her. After going with Ashton and his friends to the town bowling alley, Felix finds that she is starting to get into a clique of her own. Ashton is there to hopefully win Felix’s heart, and Felix is there strictly on business, hoping to get information for her case…or so she keeps telling herself. Against Wolf’s initial words of wisdom, Felix finds herself thinking about Ashton and accepts his invitation to go out on a date. But Felix accidentally blows her cover, and soon, Ashton is attacked. Felix was able to save him once, but now her enemies will stop at nothing to get to them. Felix is reassigned to a new mission…witness protection for Ashton and herself. Faith has been enjoying her normal life outside of the agency by spending time with her boyfriend, Ashton Mathis. They have become inseparable since meeting during Faith’s final mission with the agency several months prior. After spontaneously eloping at the courthouse, things begin to take a strange turn when Faith suddenly disappears without a trace…
Perception and Deception III
Book 3
Twenty-two year old Faith Evans is a former special agent for the Real Life Immersion Program, an organization that the FBI calls upon in the midst of unsolvable cases. After being betrayed by RLIP, she decides to cut ties with them permanently and move on to a normal life. So when she’s asked to return to the agency to help with a difficult case, her immediate answer is no. However, she soon discovers that the case involves the kidnapping of her former partner’s teenaged grandson, Paul Spencer. There’s no way she can stay away and sit quietly.
Paul was being groomed to become a future tech agent, but having computer hacking skills of his caliber at such a young age may have exposed him to a dangerous cybercrime ring that wants to use him for something life shattering. The agency suspects that Paul’s computer club classmates may have been the associated link. Faith is the only agent young enough to pass as a high school student and must befriend Paul’s classmates to find out what’s going on. But when politicians suddenly get involved, this case may be far more twisted and dangerous than she initially realized. On top of everything else, RLIP seems to be attempting to recruit Faith’s new husband, Ashton Mathis, into the agency.

Writing Prompt: Judgement Day..

cemetery-3210234_1280

If you were to judge your favourite book by its cover, would you still read it?…

A really good writing prompt under today’s date in my book, and very fitting as just this week on Facebook, an author friend asked the question ‘ what’s more important the cover or book’s blurb for readers?’ Me being a big reader I responded, and said in my personal experience and opinion the cover is not really that important, compared to the book’s blurb. Ultimately this is what makes me buy a book not the cover.

Why Is a Book’s Blurb More Important To Me?

Well, as a reader this is what tells me about the book. I have read some books with shockingly plain or even boring covers. And some which don’t represent the true ‘ride’ the book gave me, and they turned out to be outstanding five star reads!! So this is why I personally feel as a reader, covers are cool and yes important, but more focus for me is on blurb.

If I find it interesting, or pulled to the characters I am for sure going to read that book! Regardless of the cover. On the other hand, I have read some terrible books either badly written, not my cup of tea etc , and the cover was real eye-candy. I feel that a cover does not really tell you the FULL detail of a book.

What Does A Book’s Cover Show Me?

If I’m really honest, as a reader what genre it might be lolz, and that’s about it. It does not tell me if I’d like it, if it’s interesting or pull me to buy it. It may sound weird to some who read this, but as a reader personally the cover just gives me a hint of the genre. *Shrugs shoulders.*

So… If I Had To Judge My Favourite Books By Covers Would I Read Them Again?

Yes! As it was probably the blurb that pulled me in, and that’s why I picked it up. The author then did a great job with delivering to me what was written on the tin, and I enjoyed it so yeah I would. Some of my favourite books have really plain covers. In all honestly book covers that are eye-candy are lovely, and every author wants one ( me included). But, at the end of the day, it’s all about the delivery and your blurb. I know this a reader and because of this experience I have had, as a writer I try to ensure that my blurbs deliver a true representation of what’s within the pages! So never judge books by covers is my response, go by the book’s blurb.

What about you, what’s more important the cover or blurb? Which one calls you to buy or read a book? If you had to think of your fav reads and their covers, would you read them again or be pulled to them?? Let me know?

Writing Prompt…It’s hard, But Surely There’s A Positive…

morning-2243465_1280Writing prompt: It’s hard, but surely there’s a positive…

Last night like you probably did too, I watched the late night news and fell into bed somewhat exhausted. But it wasn’t  a feeling of needing sleep, in fact with ‘lock down’ and not being able to leave the house I’ve had plenty of that! No, it was a different kind of tired. I was tired of being worried, scared, and panicked by the state of the world right now. Coronavirus, one word and it sets everyone on edge. In fact, last night I saw an ambulance pull up outside my neighbour’s house, I was gripped with fear as that neighbour has a little boy the same age as my son.

Anyway, I’m tired of being worried, as I sat on the edge of the bed it came to me, this writing prompt I created myself. “It’s hard, but surely there’s a positive”. I decided with today being the 1st April it’s all about new energy, new vibes, and a new glass half full state of mind. I wanted to list exactly what I’m grateful for and feel  positive about even, if there’s a major world pandemic that’s set everyone’s life as they know it upside down.

So here goes, I sit here now at lunch time in my garden writing this, it’s a beautiful sunny day and that in itself is a reason to smile! Here’s my list of the  positive!! That I will bring with me into April and what I’m grateful for… it’s hard, but surely there is a positive right now. And I strongly believe if you put out your intentions to the Universe you’ll be heard!

gratitude-1251137_1280

Positives!

  • I’m healthy, and so far so are all of my family members and friends. This virus has not touched us.

  • I have a home that’s safe, warm, and can shelter myself and family during this madness- many don’t.

  • I’m not ‘stuck in the house’ with people I hate, or can’t stand.  Some people are, imagine that! You know what’s funny when this whole lock down thing started, I thanked God that I was not experiencing it with my son’s father! In the same house. My son and I would have been fucked!! I kinda laughed to myself last night and thought, ‘thank God I got rid of him before lock down happened’ LOLZ.

  • I’m grateful for my son’s step-father, and step-daughter whole-heartedly. While due to the travel ban they’re not here, they’re safe, and that I’m grateful for!!

  • Lock down has allowed me to focus more ( than I already do), on my son’s schooling.  Our bond is close anyway, but as we’ve all been in the house for the last what, nineteen days or so it’s like we’ve really bonded again! we’ve enjoyed our days.

  • I’ve made great progress with writing, yesterday I posted some ‘lock down goals’ and I have one story fully outlined! Today I wish to ramp up the word count.

  • I have food, clothes, water all at my disposal when some don’t right now. Like for example in Italy where people are looting stores due to their need.

  • Thankfully, I work at home anyway so this lock down has not messed up work. But, the challenge is that I’ve had to change work hours around, so I can work when the house is quiet…which is no major thing. I’m just working late at night or early hours of the morning- nothing major as I’m a night owl anyway and don’t mind it. A lot of people right now their ability to earn has been cut off, as they can’t really work at home, but must stay home. Or they risk their lives  and those of their family by leaving the house to go to work. Not knowing if they will come into contact with the virus, and bring it home! They deserve ‘danger money’ pay in my eyes.

So overall, I feel that it’s hard right now but there are positives. And we all must remember this no matter how small the positives are be thankful!! You are alive and reading this, be thankful all you have to do is wash your hands and be careful. You’re not (hopefully) in the hospital fighting for your life. I challenge you, today, this week, as we enter a new month with new energy and vibrations, to think about exactly what there is  can be positive about and thankful, during this time of madness! Then write that shit down! And don’t forget it!! Even drop your link  to your blog post below so I can read it.

Who’s In On This, This Week? #lockdowngoals

Good afternoon!

I hope you’re all well in the part of the world you are? And your family are too. So yesterday, I was inspired by Didi who is doing March’s WIP challenge, which looks good! I can’t wait to see her story. Then this morning I woke up with a creative “download” of my own. On my FB page I put this out to those I’m friends, with and wish to do it here too! Creatives take a look….target-1513758_640

Today’s the day I woke up with some creative downloads for a couple of projects 🤩. Anyone up for a WIP ( Works In Progress), writing OR creativity sprint with me today until the weekend? Last week I did one with Author Kristi Tailor. Let’s carry on.

It’s real easy, drop your creative goals in the comments, and let’s check in as the week progresses, and motivate each other. We’re all stuck at home, so let’s go and get some novels or novellas outlined or done! It can be anything you wish to do, no matter what as long as it’s creative. Here are my goals, a little ambitious but I’mma see what I can do in the next week.

1. Add 3k words to the 20k words of my crime thriller. Then submit the full plot outline to my publisher to consider.

2. Outline and change the direction of a short story I started to write for a different project. I now wish to make this the outline of book #1 of a crime/detective series! It’s going to be a ‘who-dun-it” thriller 🧐Then submit the outline to my publisher.

3. Outline one “billionaire romance” story! 💋😍I’ve never written one of these… but I got an idea.😆 I gotta hot billionaire in mind. 🤑💋

Now notice my goals are outlines of projects just to get started, and a small writing task to keep it realistic! And achievable. Set a goal of something you wish to make progress with.

DROP YOUR GOALS IF YOU’RE UP FOR THIS CREATIVE CHALLENGE, TAG OR MENTION OTHER WRITERS THAT MIGHT BE TOO, EVEN PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT WRITERS BUT ‘CREATIVES’ OF SOME TYPE. I WILL TAG AUTHORS I WHO I THINK MAY BE UP FOR THIS. PASS THIS CHALLENGE TO ANYONE YOU WANT! LET’S GO!

Kim’s Review- ‘Kill For You’

5 ‘Outstanding Character Development’ Stars!!

Thank you to Silver Dagger Tours for my free copy in exchange for a honest review.

Well of course I’d be drawn to this book, the genre, the blurb, the man in a suit on the front it all screams ‘Kim’s read’ really. And it did not disappoint one bit!! In all honesty, I am so proud to have this author representing the romantic suspense genre. Here’s what I enjoyed.

Character development– Boy, can this author craft an alpha-male  (that’s not a dick, and come across as not very nice. ) The whole male line up is just tooooooooooo dieeeeeeeeeee for! In one shape or form I swear to God, I tell no lies here. I found the main character Octavio to be very believable, authentic and hot! His co-workers and the other guys who he worked with in the plot, were all just as hot and enjoyable to meet. The same for the females, Faith is just adorable and so strong. Overall I felt that this author did a great job with developing a strong male lead, and a believable female lead that has experienced major trauma.

Now the ‘bad guys’, to me they were also really enjoyable to read and very well developed.

Plot and Pace- it moves quickly, has twists and turns and one very unexpected change for Faith. I never saw it coming ( no spoilers). It was beautiful to read, and nice that it was an outside of the box twist too. The whole plot ties together nicely, it felt almost like reading not just romantic suspense, but also a detective story, as we readers ‘get to the bottom of the mystery’ around Faith.

Reality-  I must say, I found this plot to be very realistic, it touches on abuse and the  human sex and slave trade. It tied in very well with Faith’s  plot twist I mentioned. So not only for me as a reader did I feel the characters were extremely believable, so was the plot, reality, likelihood of things happening. It all left me with no doubts over the character’s motives and actions. It touches on drugs, crime, and gang related activities also. Just brilliantly executed.

Overall, five wonderful, well written and enjoyable stars from me. Romantic suspense fans you don’t wanna miss this one, I’m just sayin’.  I would read more of this author’s work. I have the next one on my kindle, and gutted I can’t read it in time for the end of her book tour, but trust I’ll be reading it!! I wish Author Ayden K. Morgen all the best with her career, and may her pen take over the genre by storm!
