Book Review: ‘What About Love’ by Bai Jaye 4 Lovely Stars! ( AA Romance) #amreading

Bai JayneWow what a lovely little bite sized love story with a cute happy ever after! I really enjoyed reading this novella from just the first view pages. I would have liked more to this.   This author is new to me, I stumbled across the book on Facebook, and read it on one sitting! Let’s get into the review.

Blurb

Running out of the back of the bridal shop as her fiancé comes in looking for her Gabrielle Nowell literally runs into the man of her dreams on the street. When their bodies collide the magic of love fills the air. Both of them are instantly smitten, but Gabrielle knows it could never amount to anything with her wedding set for Valentines Day a little less than two months away.
DeSai Hardy is the latest hot R&B singer in the game. Signed to Golden Nowell records, he is engaged to Gabrielle Nowell, the princess of the company. However, true to his bad boy R&B image, DeSai continues to juggle multiple women at a time. DeSai has Gabby as his future wife, Sasha as his main chick and now has added another to his rotation.
Ace Prince wasn’t looking for love, but somehow cupid caught up with him anyway. Always focused on his daughter and his businesses he didn’t have much time for anything else. When he bumped into Gabrielle on the street, he couldn’t fight his attraction. Never has he set his sights on a woman that was spoken, but this time he’s losing the battle and fast. Will love win in the end or will hearts be fumbled?

Kim’s Review 4 Lovely Stars! More Please

I genuinely love it when I stumble across a book that’s short, but engaging and enjoyable a good example of an author that does not need to babble on to craft a good tale. What drew me into this story was the blurb, I remember thinking to myself, ‘wow these are two very contrasting men here, I wonder how this will turn out?’ Most importantly I hoped that the author would be able to build the contrast between DeSai and Ace…. boy did she! Here’s what I loved.

Characters-  The separation between the two main men’s mentality was clearly there. In fact I really disliked DeSai and I was meant to! He was not a nice guy  which made me lean towards Gabby and root for her. Gabby herself was a like-able character too. Ace, to me was  a great  ‘book boyfriend’. He was sweet, romantic and he fought for Gabby, literally (no spoilers) and emotionally.  In the end I felt like he was very deserving of her love, and that he was just the kind of man she needed after DeSai. The other female characters also were cool to read, even if  they were up to no good. Generally the characters were interesting to read.

Story line- This is a novella, and it moves quickly and it was engaging to read right from the start. I also liked the push and pull between DeSai and Gabby.  I really liked how Ace and Gabby’s  love developed. To me as a reader it was a classic example of ‘just knowing’ when you meet someone. Or some may call it ‘insta-love’ in romance, but it was realistic to me. Sometimes you do meet people and know that you could build something with them. I liked the fact that Ace was not even looking for love, but Gabby seemed to be the right woman to change his mind.

I found the set up of the story rather unique, this is an arranged marriage kind of between DeSai and Gabby. The circumstances being around DeSai’s fame and Gabby’s father’s values as a man struck me as unique to read.

Reality- I liked that part of this story shows Ace as a father, he has a little girl who he is responsible for. I liked that he was a good father, and that his relationship with the mother of his child was not typical ‘baby mama and baby daddy’ drama. I’m not really a fan of stories that play into these stereotypes within African American or urban romance. I loved that this author did not feel the need to hype up a dramatic woman, who would not allow the father of her child to move on. Or Gabby have ‘issues’ with the other woman.  I also liked that as I read I could feel the change of heart in Ace, and his view point over whether he wanted to settle in a relationship.

Overall, What About Love is a lovely romance story with good characters, an enjoyable story line, and a beautiful happy ending. The only thing I would have loved is to have more on the development with Ace and Gabby, once they finally got over their challenges I felt like I could have read more once it ended. That’s a good thing!   I recommend  this novella to all those who enjoy romance generally, that can be read in under two hours, those who like multicultural or African American romance and are looking for a genuine love story. I would read more from the author. It’s free to read on Kindle Unlimited too at the time of this review, with great reviews.

Writing Prompt: Million-dollar Question? #amwriting

Writing Prompt> “Why do you blog?!

Lol, what a writing prompt for today? In all honesty I have no real idea, it just feels like something I gotta do! Like put on my eyelashes every morning LOLZ. I started this blog four years ago now. And it started as it was what I ‘heard’ authors are ‘supposed to do’. So I just thought, okay cool let’s give it ago. Over the years I’ve met some wonderful people.

imagesAnd come across some beautiful blogs. I met my co-author via blogging too, and if I had not started here on WordPress, I would not have two anthologies, I’m very proud of, under my belt with her. I don’t get to blog as much as I’ve love to. But the focus of the blog  has changed over the years.

What’s The Point Of My Blog?

These days, it’s not only a way for me to connect with readers, share my work,or readers to follow and find me, or an ‘author platform’ as they call it, nope! It’s about sharing ‘what’s good’ in the world of books generally. I like to interview other creatives on the 25th of each month, and connect people with other great authors, and a chance to market them. Generally I love pimping  out authors and great reads, so I also do lots of book promo and work with tour companies, read and review books,  and share them with you and help other authors, I like to also drop any writing tips I can that may help.

So my reason for blogging has become much more wider, and this site is not just about me! I also like to just generally chit chat too one in a while, do writing prompts ( like this), weekly that I find in my book.

What Does Blogging Do For Me Personally?

Feeds my need to write! About any and everything, a chance to also be social and connect. I just like writing really y’all so that’s all it does is itches that scratch. I would like to maybe do other blogs as well, like on other specialised subjects that I love, outside of writing. Maybe one day! Generally I blog to connect with you, so you can connect with me, and I always be myself. So yes, I will swear, yes I will be blunt and no I won’t always try to come across as perfect, cos I’m not. So far I’ve not offended anyone, so I will keep on blogging as me, as person in my own voice and personality.

Why did you start your blog? And why do you blog?

cherguischild - my review

3 Stars !

Thank you to Silver Dagger Tours for my free copy, in exchange for an honest review.  The blurb really called me I loved the location of this novel. I was thrilled that’s set in London and the main character Olivia is British. I recognised all the spots in London and enjoyed it. I also love, love, love, the south of France too and really enjoyed the story here. Morocco is a place I have always wanted to go and experience too. All this I loved. I even loved the actual story plot, but what held back my reading experience were three  small things.

1. Some parts it felt rushed, and if they were not maybe there could have been  more ‘thrill’ and the ‘psychological ‘ experience, for me as a reader. The story is told in the past and present I loved this! And suits the genre. But while the present tense story as we follow Olivia on her search for her child is in first person, the past story on what happened and why she lost contact with them is in third person, which was fine to read. But the back story  in the past felt very rushed as I read.  At times I could not work out if I was in the past story or present.

2. The rushed feeling also did not allow me to connect with Olivia, or  who did what and why. In the present tense, the first person of Olivia’s POV as a reader for me, it was mainly ‘told’  as a story, rather than shown to me.  Her emotions, thoughts, feelings, where her head was at  etc, I could not see or understand. Or Olivia’s grief over her missing child. I felt disconnected or distant in both past and present generally from her and her story as a reader.

2. Olivia basically, without giving too many spoilers left the hospital  after being forced into labour my mother nature, and left her twins there in Morocco. Right after she had given birth like within an hour or so!  As  a woman who has given birth myself, I found this not possible. She had a hard labour with twins ( harder than mine). As I read I knew even with my easier birth, I would not have had the strength to  get up and leave. With the labour she had I doubted she could do that. So this part of ‘reality’ within the plot left me wondering a bit.  Emotionally I also could not understand why this character left, she wanted to be a mother? But if I had connected with her closer  from the start with ‘show me’ rather than ‘tell me a story’, and parts not rushed in the story maybe I could have.

Overall, for me this was an okay read, I did not hate it at all but it never overwhelmed me with ‘wow’ ‘OMG’.  I would read another by the author. With this one I have read,  if there was more development of the character’s emotions,  and less rushed story telling. Or  if maybe the reality around labour for women (generally) and abandoning her children was more realistic, not just get up and go then start to look for work and make a new friends after, this would have really been the icing on the cake for me and possibly a four or five start read! But I’m just one reader and even if I did not feel the character connection, or ‘psychological fiction’ vibe as a reader I hoped for, there will be readers who will find this a perfect five star read! Three stars from me, I wish this author so much luck and the right readership. So give it a try, if you feel the book’s blurb calls you.

The scene was Lola and Maxwell’s first encounter when she picked him up from the airport in Nigeria because she had been assigned as his driver-about-town.

When he opened his eyes, he then realized the car was already parked.

With sunglasses perched across her head, Lola held his car door open without a smile on her face.

“Welcome to Whispering Palms Hotel & Resort,” she recited. “Have a wonderful time, sir. Don’t shut yourself in your room. Explore all the resort has to offer. Go out to see our beautiful historic town.”

“Stop talking.” His tone was gruff because he resented the fact, she insisted on calling him, ‘sir’. He stood in front of her after climbing down from the 4-Wheel Drive. “I can get my own door. Don’t you listen to anything I say?”

In that brief moment, he noted the blusher on top of her cheeks and the cuteness of her chin softened the features of her oblong face. Winging out her dark eyeliner helped her slanted eyes appear bigger and wider.

Lola shook her head before she swanked toward the trunk.

“What a shame! I listen to what makes sense.”

He followed behind. “What are you talking about?”

“I’m shocked you don’t know when to say, thank you. Why do you have to be impolite all the time?”

“I’m not in the mood to argue with you. I’ll get my things and be out of your way.”

Folding her arms across her busty cleavage, she glowered at him.

Ignoring her combative stance, he retrieved his luggage and smirked.

“Go ruin another client’s mood.”

“What a nightmare trip,” she sneered, not hiding her resentment any longer. “I’m happy it’s over, sir. Don’t call me again. Find another driver to torture.”

“I feel the same way.” He shrugged, fully intending to delete her from his memory.

Without the exchange of goodbyes, he opened his wallet, took out several dollar bills and handed it over. Despite his irritation with the woman, giving tips was part of the American culture.

“Thank you. Keep your money, Mr. Maxwell.”

Marching forward, he tugged the front passenger door open and placed the bills on the seat.

“I can’t in good conscience deprive you of your tip.”

“Even though you hated riding with me? I’m surprised you’ve got a conscience. I thought you were dead inside. Dead!” she spat out the last word with a vicious tone.

“Maybe I am.”

He withdrew and headed for the hotel entry point, towing his luggage along. Her harsh words cut through his core and shook his inside.

To be honest, he felt dead inside. Cold.

Excerpts – First chapter of each book

Inside Out

Prologue

The man stood up from his squatting position on the floor and wiped his head with his forearm. Blood smeared across grotesquely. The big man, breathing heavily, held his hands on his hips effeminately. He smiled as he looked down at his work.

“All done,” he said, dusting his hands together. The motion was futile. He could not remove the blood from his hands just by brushing them against each other. He was a creature of habit, so the hand motion served as more of a finishing statement. He didn’t intend to literally clean his hands. He had done this motion so many times, after his work, that it was just… a thing. Besides, his right hand was cut, so without some first aid, the bleeding would continue.

“Gotta go, Bob,” he said. The man began to gather his tools. A small saw, hammer, and chef knife were first into the bag. Then he untied Bob’s wrists’, wound up the bloody rope, and put it into the bag. Next was the vial of tranquilizer and needle. He grabbed a plastic bag filled with his trophy and tucked it into the side pocket of his bag. Lastly, the man grabbed his extra-large flashlight and turned it off. He slipped it into the bag and moved to the doorway. He looked back at the dead, bloody pile of human flesh, muscle, and bones. The man smiled and tipped an imaginary hat.

“Thanks for a good time.”

He left the room, closing the door behind him.

Chapter One

Jane and Mark were in love.

As they strolled up the Cleveland Cascade, the sun was setting behind them. The orange light shimmered on Lake Merritt and the windy, winter breeze whipped at the trees. Jane and Mark held hands tight as they climbed the 139-step ornamental stairway.

Mark broke free and tickled Jane’s side. She buckled with laughter and yelled for him to stop. He smiled and hugged her tight. They touched their soft lips together. The couple took a moment to look out at the lake and both let out a great sigh. The view was breathtaking. Oakland California was a city of daily, revolving weather changes, but that night was especially cold.

The couple stood for some time, watching the sky darken as the sun continued to set. Mark let go of Jane and gently tugged her further up the stairs. They came to a spot where the stairs parted and made way for an area full of foliage. They sat on the base of the set of stairs on the right and embraced again. Mark rubbed Jane’s arm to warm her, as her thin windbreaker flapped a bit against the wind. They whispered quiet words of love to one another, sitting in peace, just the two of them.

Until they heard a thud.

Jane jumped in shock and Mark tightened his grip on her to show her he was there. Next, they heard feet dashing towards them. They sprung up from their seat as a figure speed pass on the other side of the foliage. Mark wanted to yell out, but instead just watched the character take the stairs like an Olympic sprinter until he landed on Lakeshore Avenue and made a sharp right towards Grand Lake.

They didn’t know how to react at first, but then in a whisper, Jane spoke. “What was that?”

“I don’t know.” Mark cleared the lump from his throat. “Did he fall?”

“Wh-what do you mean?” Jane whimpered.

“You heard the thump before he came bolting down? Maybe he fell.”

“I hope he’s okay,” Jane said.

Quickly, the couple turned towards a new sound. A moan.

“What was that?” Mark asked. He moved towards the sound.

“No!” Jane shrieked, gripping Mark’s forearm.

“What if someone is hurt?” He spoke to her humanity. He looked at her with concern in his piercing, green eyes, and she relented. She released him and watched, gripped with fear, as he crept up the stairs.

Mark made it to the next landing where he saw a dark pile of shadows. He got closer and jumped when a moan rumbled from the pile. He pulled his phone, activated the screen, and pulled up his flashlight app. Mark had long hated his phone and never before had he wished for a Maglite so much. The shallow beam of light whisked over the pile and Mark realized he was right. Someone was hurt. He rushed over and assessed the situation.

“Are you okay? Hello,” Mark shouted as he touched and shook the side facing body.

“Mark?” Jane called from the bottom of the stairs. She was beginning to worry. Every second felt like an hour.

“Hey! Are you…” Mark called until he finally got the body turned towards him.

His shrill scream filled the air as he saw the face of the victim. Jane ran up the stairs faster than she had ever moved. She stopped short, a few feet from the scene. Mark stared in horror at a face with blood caked, empty and blackened eye sockets, and a mouth grotesquely sewn shut.

El Jefe

Chapter One

The 20-something year old sat straight up. It should have been a hard task, considering he had just been pummeled in the face repeatedly. He was bleeding from his broken nose and practically drowning in the waterfall of blood rushing into his panting mouth. What is the first aid protocol for a bloody nose? Head up? No, head down—to prevent choking on your own blood.

He was doing great keeping his head down. It was easy because every time he lifted his head, he was punched. His head bobbed back on his neck and then his chin came back to rest on his chest. He was still sitting up straight, however. As bad as he wanted to slump over and roll into a ball, he couldn’t. He was attached to his high-backed chair with rope all the way up to his shoulders, wrists bound to the arms.

He also couldn’t escape his torture chamber. Lit by nothing more than three hanging lights, the room he was in was the size of a classroom with a dirt floor and no windows. He had been brought there blind folded and he couldn’t see a way out of the room to his safety.

This young man of a proud upbringing had been in and out of trouble as he grew up, but at that moment he felt like he was in the worst trouble of his life. He felt like he was shaming his mother, again, and maybe for the last time. He felt all of her hard work trying to raise him, spending all her money to send him to a private, Catholic school, and all her tears meant nothing now. He had failed her again.

The man beating him was 30 years his senior. Lean and strong, the attacker stood with no shirt on. His slacks were pressed with a crisp crease, and his dress shoes were clean. His muscles rippled as he cranked his arm back and slugged his victim again. He shook his hand after bringing it back from the collision. He was conditioned to take the pain of recoil from his punch. Nevertheless, he dunked his hand in a large glass bowl full of ice water sitting on a long banquet table. He left it there for an uncomfortably long time, the blood rinsing from his fist and slowly turning the water pink. He watched the young man flicker in and out of consciousness. When their eyes met, the abuser spoke in Spanish.

“When I was your age, I was in America. I was humble, hard-working, and smart.” He continued to linger near the table, hand in the bowl. The glass was covered in condensation and the 20-something could imagine how cool and refreshing the water could be, if his blood weren’t in it.

The water was North Pole cold, but the elder didn’t mind. He looked down the table and smiled. “I was working my way up in power, thinking on my toes and making connections.” He removed his hand.

“Why?” the captive croaked.

“Why what?” the elder roared, irritated by the interruption. He clinched his fists to bring his anger down. “Be specific.”

The young man didn’t respond. The attacker rushed forward and clenched his victims bruised and swollen face between his cold, wet hands.

“Why what, Carlito?” he asked in a placid tone.

Carlos was terrified as the abuser pulled his head forward. When their foreheads touched, he grimaced in pain.

“I know what you want to know,” he comforted, “but you will never understand why.” He stood, releasing his young victims face. He clenched his fists and struck him in the nose again.

“Because you.”

Punch.

“Are too.”

Punch.

“Stupid to…”

When he noticed his victim was losing consciousness, he stopped and began observing him.

“I’m in control of your destiny now. Don’t try to die on me.” The elder turned back to the table and iced his hand. “I have a meeting to get to, so I guess we should finish up.”

He waited for his fist to become numb. Carlos moaned awake and coughed up blood.

“Before I moved to America, I studied boxing. I was born in Mexico City. My mom took me and my siblings to live in Tepito after my father abandoned us. That fucking coward. When I was twelve, I met Carlos Zarate. You know, the famous boxer.” He smiled staring off at the memory, then became stoic. “Well, I won’t lie. I didn’t meet him. He passed us in the streets during a parade in his honor. I knew I could be a better fighter than him, so I started practicing, watching bouts on TV in the local cafes and beating the shit out of the neighborhood kids.” He laughed a little. “I was the best boxer in Tepito at that time.”

He pulled his hand from the water and curled his fingers into a fist.

His victim shuddered.

The elder put his hand back in the water. Still speaking in Spanish, he continued. “I never went pro. Never had a chance to beat the shit out of Zarate. With his record, though,” he laughed, “I would have been destroyed. He was the greatest.” He pulled his hand from the ice bath again and shook off the lingering water. He walked down the table and looked over his tools.

Gold, silver, platinum, and titanium were just a few of the metals represented. Each shiny item had the standard four holes needed for the fingers to slide inside. Brass knuckles were a standard bad guy item, but these were extravagant. From knife to gun attachments and everything in between, the collection was grim to those who had to face it. His favorite was the corkscrew model. The silver piece had a single four-loop corkscrew on the plate, and it was angled perfectly for plunging into soft areas of the face and body. Although it was his favorite, he had never used it. The ones he used most were those with the gold-plated spikes. He had them in small, medium, and large and that day, he felt medium would be the best.

He slid on the weapon and turned to his victim. The young man saw his fate. He closed his eyes and as the spikes entered his face, he prayed for a swift death.

After an uncountable number of punches, he was dead. His face and head were mulch on the dirt floor and his neck had been shredded. The elder slipped off the knuckles and dropped them in the bowl. He was covered in blood. He rinsed both of his hands and dried them on a pristine, white towel from the table. He pulled his phone from his pocket and started a call.

“Yes, I’m done.” He hung up the phone and a team of four men came into the dank room. He wiped the blood from his chest and arms as best he could and slipped on his shirt as the men cleaned the mess, packed the weapons, and removed the dead body as fast and efficient as a NASCAR team.

“Did you get anything?” one of them stopped to ask him.

The killer slipped on his sports jacket. “Of course not. That kid had no sense and apparently, no power in the organization.” He headed for the door. “But he was an excellent warm up.”

Writing Prompt: Imperfection #amwriting

mistakes-2460733_1280

“Imperfections- in things, in people, in places add character to life. Tell us about an imperfection you cherish?”

Mistakes! I Love Them!

Yep, that’s right I do, and a great writing prompt under today’s date in the book.  To be honest, I feel that as we all make mistakes it’s an imperfection that we all have, as people. Whether it be taking the wrong turning while driving, work mistakes, or in my case as a writer God forbid typos!!  These are just minor things of course. In all seriousness, I value this ‘imperfection’ of making mistakes ( major/serious ones and minor ones), we have as humans, as I believe that the mistakes that we all make do a few things as well as add character to life:

  1. Teach.
  2. Give direction.
  3. Allow growth.
  4. Confidence.

Now, I’m not just talking about the minor mistakes we may make on a day-to-day basis. I also mean those major, maaaaaaaaaaaajjjjjjjjjjor mistakes we make in life, generally.  The ones that make is question what the hell we were doing LOL.

Think about it. If you’ve ever made a mistake most likely you did learn something from it. Even if it was not pretty, you still learned something, which then gave you a direction, sometimes even a new one! This new direction brings ‘growth’ be it mentally, as a person, or in your skills set/attitude etc. and then, I have no doubt that you had a brand new air of confidence about you, right? Yep I knew it!

Sometimes…. this doesn’t happen, though.

Yeah, by this I  mean when we make a mistake, if we don’t embrace it or this ‘imperfection’ and by this I mean the actual mistake or action, not the fact that we made one, it’s in these cases feel that a person won’t experience the beauty of the mistake.  The beauty being, the four things I listed above and the positive side to embrace of this ‘imperfection’ we all have.  These four things, in my view do four further things.

  1. Heal.
  2. Strength.
  3. Determination.
  4. Self-belief.

Yes,  as you’ve probably clicked to me mistakes (the imperfection I love in life), are things that provide a circle of experiences– that better you. If you do embrace this imperfection and experience what I mention in the first paragraphs, most times we come full circle and heal (even if the mistake was not traumatic, healing comes in many forms and it could just be as simple as knowing that you’ll never make that minor mistake again). Then, we have strength to keep going, be determined, and that only leads to increased self-belief in my view.

Overall, in all honesty many people hate making mistakes  ( myself included I do like to do things as best I can, generally). But, when push comes to shove if I had to embrace an imperfection in life, as someone who likes perfection, I’d say I’d embrace making mistakes. No matter how major or minor, as if embraced fully you can gain a hell of a lot, no matter how minor a mistake it was!

I think the imperfection that adds character to life is our natural human ability to fuck up, royally sometimes! *shrugs shoulders*.

What about you? What imperfection do you feel adds character to life?

Book Review-‘His True Love’ By Lynn Chantale 4 Intriguing Stars!! + Giveaway (Mystery/Romance)

Kim’s Review 4 ‘intriguing’ read more stars!

Thank you to Silver Dagger Book Tours for my free copy in exchange for an honest review. Well, damn what have I stumbled on here!! What a read. You know, I was drawn in from page one and I read this in one whole sitting. A wonderful bite sized mystery/crime/romance novella of just 100 pages. I would read the next one in the series for sure. Let’s get into the review.

Story-line/ plot – I was pulled in by the blurb and cover of this book. I honestly expected the romance and love element to be connected to the victims of the crime, but it’s not! Here we have three detectives two men and a woman, who are lovers! Yes!! This kinda shocked me and kept me turning pages, as they are a team of lovers fighting crime. This made some very steamy reading in some parts that I really enjoyed. But it’s not overly explicit at all, all tasteful sex scenes and there are not too many so that’s cool, there is more plot than sex, which I loved.

The plot is quick moving, I loved that the author put the reader right in the middle of the action, from page one. I found that I had to focus, pay attention and read closely to get to grips with the crime and who did what. In all honesty, I really enjoyed the pace, plot, and unexpected relationship with the detectives.

The crime is solved, and they find the ‘bad guy’ by working together. I’m not one for spoilers, I won’t say too much, but we follow the ‘bad guy’ and readers are aware of him. But the story plays out as us readers following the detectives trying to piece together the crime. I liked this.

Characters- I liked them all really, the three detectives, the woman captured and everyone.  They were all believable too. The female detective is full of balls and fearless, and the male ones very protective as her, as she is used as bait to solve the crime- no spoilers.

The only thing I would have loved is more  character development on the ‘bad guy.’ I would have loved to know more about him, and the relationship he had with his girlfriend, which caused him to do the things he did.  I would have also liked to know more about Heather, after the detectives found her, what happened to her? Now when a reader wants to know more this is never a bad thing! They are truly engaged in the story. With the character line up, I was. The characters are also very multi-cultural and diverse also, this I really loved.

Overall for me I felt as first time reader of this author’s work I feel that His True Love is a great start to a detective series. And it left me wanting to read the next one, the story ends with another case for the detectives to follow up, and when it’s released  I would love to read it. The story flows well, with interesting characters and for sure it’s an intriguing read, as you have the sub-plot of romance with the detectives. I really liked it, pages turned quickly for me.

I feel in all honesty, if the story was just padded out a tiny bit more with details on the ‘bad guy’, the lady who was captured- Heather and found that would have been ideal! But even without this, it’s a good read.  Four intriguing and engaging stars from me. I recommend it to those who like mystery an detective stories with a difference! This is not your average read, it’s truly different with the detective’s love affair. Great start to a series, let’s have more!

Full Moon Story – Meet Gretchen, From ‘Witchful Thinking!’ #fullmoon #paranormal #kdsuspense @didi_oviatt

MoonMeet Gretchen guys from ‘Witchful Thinking.’  One of the stories in The Suspenseful Collection  #2 Blurred Lines.   Following on from Didi’s WIP share last week of this story. I love it!! And I loved writing it. Didi really forced me out of my comfort zone when she put two paranormal stories in my inbox to write. Arrrgggh! I am so not a paranormal writer, but this story allowed me to really go wild, and even incorporate some of my own heritage. I loved it.

So, it’s a full moon week this week coming. How did I remember, just stepped outside to get something from the garden and the moon she’s shining brightly over my house! I took a picture she is bright and full. How beautiful, happy full moon. In the mean time, meet Gretchen on the night of her full moon encounter with three witches…

The Night Of The Full Moon, In Canada…

With a deep breath I went over to the back door that led out to the garden that I had not ventured out into yet. Peeking out of the curtain, I saw that the moonlight flooded over the grass, and there was a tree over on the far left, and a small pond also caught my eye. Next to the door a large silver key hung on a string. Instinct told me it was for the door, and sure enough it was. I unlocked it, turned the knob, then opened the door with a slow high-pitched creak. My senses peaked as a slight breeze blew in and tickled my skin. As I moved my eyes over the moonlit garden, everything was still.

I stepped back and left the door open a crack to grab the tray on the table, then I stepped into the garden slowly taking in every detail. As I crossed the threshold the backdoor slammed behind me, unexplained. There was no wind or any movement. I stood frozen under the moonlight with the tray in my hand, an eerie feeling surrounding me as the owls hooted. I anticipated something, anything, but nothing came.  Quickly, I set to work under the large tree. I placed down the three candles, then poured a shot of rum and placed it by the purple candle for Oya, I sat the strawberries down by the red candle for Maria, and finally lit a cigarette and balanced it on a rock near the black one for Brigette. Then I lit the three candles and stood back. I couldn’t think what to say to call them. I had some offerings, but would that be enough? After a beat, I said the first thing that came to me.

“Witches of the night, witches of the dark realm, witches of all witches I summon thee. Maman Brigette from Haiti, Oya from Africa, Maria de Padilla from Spain, I summon thee. Please accept these offerings here for you.”

Disappointed, I watched the candle flames as they flickered under the moonlight. I don’t know what I expected. Maybe some kind of poof of air, and three witches to appear like in the movies with a dramatic entrance. My confidence left me. What kind of witch am I if I can’t even get this right?, ran through my mind as I mentally beat myself up. Deflated, as I felt like a lost cause and sorry excuse for a witch. I turned away from my so-called witching hour seance and headed over to the tree to rack my brain over what to do next.

As I turned my back the moonlight became slightly overcast. It was like a light had gone out, the grass, leaves, and branches on the trees rustled. Just as quickly as the moonlight dimmed, by the time I looked up at the sky, and back down to the candles the moon’s bright light reappeared and bathed the garden.

“Oh shit!”

I literally jumped out of my own skin. An elderly and sickly pale white lady, with waist length red hair, dressed all in black, and top hat with bones stuck into it sat on a rock. I watched in disbelief as she inhaled the smoke of the cigarette I lit.

“Eyee, appreciate this lass, but next time hand rolled tobacco,” she said with a Scottish twang.

“Brigette?” I racked my brain. It could only have been her. The only white dark witch goddess celebrated in Haiti, as her legacy came over with white women extradited from the British Isles to Haiti during slavery.

“Don’t-na act so surprised, you summoned me. This better be good, child. Nice rum by the way, next time add a few red peppers in ‘ere.”

I stood with my mouth open as she bent down and inhaled the content of the shot glass.

“Hola, you need to use your imagination more, fruit? Really.”

I spun around at the Spanish accent that met my ear and saw the glamourous Maria de Padilla, standing tall behind me. As she glided over towards me, I couldn’t help but gulp at her. She had on a traditional gold-colored robe that upper-classed European women wore in the 1300s, her dark-brown hair was elegantly piled on top of her head and laced with red flowers.

“Maria?”

She abruptly stopped in her tracks then snapped her neck back towards me. “Senorita Padilla.”

“Yeee… yes… ma’am.” I stuttered out as she glided over towards Brigette.

“Hola, Brigette are you well?”

“Can’t complain.”

I watched in awe as the two witches of the dark realm greeted each other like old friends, and Maria gracefully hitched up her robe then sat on the rock beside Brigette, who was puffing on her cigarette like her life depended on it. As Maria waved her hand to let Brigette know she didn’t appreciate the smell of smoke, Brigette let out a deadly witch’s cackle that echoed around the garden, then downed her shot and raised her glass to me.

“Where’s the rest?”

She gruffly addressed me, her black-kohl-lined eyes penetrated through me and sent a slight chill down my spine. I quickly picked up the bottle and took the lid off it, ready to pour her another shot. To my surprise she snatched it from me and took a long swig from the bottle.

“Well, is this us then?” She asked.

“Ah no, I called—”

Before I could finish my sentence, the winds picked up and a heavy downpour of raindrops started to beat down on my skin.

“Oh, she’s so dramatic,” I heard Maria say dryly. I could barely make out where they sat anymore, due to the heavy rain. I ran under the tree for shelter just as a roll of thunder roared around me, and a flash of lightning cracked its gold rays across the ink-black night sky. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t shitting myself; it felt like the heavens had opened and God himself was on his way to claim his world.  Hailstones tumbled down, and through the sheets of ice I tried to see what was going on as I shielded myself from the attack and force of nature.

After what felt like a thirty-second, violent, mini-thunderstorm out of the blue, as the rain came to a stand-still and the wind settled, the moon light shone down on the garden. With Maria and Brigette to my left sitting on the rocks, in front of us a ray of purple light manifested, then gave way to one of the most striking women I had ever seen. She was at least six-foot tall, with skin the color of mahogany, her athletic frame was barely covered in tiger print female warrior’s outfit—a skimpy skirt, and bra revealed a toned midsection. On her feet she wore gladiator sandals, and in her right hand was a spear the same height as her. The moonlight bounced off the serrated edge of her weapon. As I studied her more closely, I could see the tribal marks inked across her face and body. Her hair was wild, wool-textured locks of black curls.

“Fuck me… Oya?”

I murmured to myself, as I came out from behind the tree. She took long strides over to us, Brigette stood slowly, her old bones giving her little support. Maria steadied her. Brigette’s pale hand held out the bottle of rum in the warrior princess’ direction.

“My sister from another mother! Dramatic as fuck,” Brigette cackled. “Good to see you. How’s Africa these days?”

Oya took a swig from the bottle and sat it down next to her spear. “Good, thank you.”  Her deep voice bellowed out, and it surprised me to hear her speak so articulately in an accent I had never heard before.

The three of them turned to me by the tree, I was frozen inside but my body shook from the downpour of rain. Brigette nodded in my direction and as if by ‘magic’ my pajamas were dry as a hot summer’s day.

“So, child, you called. What’s the problem?” Maria addressed me, as she popped a strawberry into her mouth.

“Come child, don’t-a be scared, ya called us!” Brigette cackled again as she beckoned me from under the tree towards the rocks they sat on. Timidly I walked over to them and took a seat on the grass in front of my three older advisors.

“My name is—”

“We know who you are, Gretchen.” Brigette cut in and then smiled a wicked toothless smile. As scary as she looked, I was warming to her.

“Okay, I’ll get straight to the point. Fate came to see me.”

The three witches gasped and clutched their chests, then looked from each other to me, as I sat on the grass. I sat still unsure of what their reaction meant. The three of them cackled so hard a bolt of lightning struck the sky, causing the owls to depart from their branches into the sky.

“It’s time.” The threesome rang out in unison, then looked at each other and burst out into another fit of giggles. The atmosphere grew heavy as the lightning and thunder roared again with their laughter.

“What do you mean ‘it’s time’?” I nervously asked in a low voice. Another fit of laughter at my expense broke out again, then they silenced themselves, put their resting bitch faces on show as they rose up in unison off the rocks where they sat.

The trio, a six-foot African warrior princess, a petite, Spanish, glamorous woman from the 1300s, and a dark goth-looking, pale, white lady with fire red-hair, in a top hat, dressed all in black glided over to me in the air. Fear kicked in again. I stood up and tripped over a rock, Oya pointed towards me and broke my fall as she placed me back on my feet. Oya lifted me up with just her stare in my direction and brought me over to the trio in mid- air.

“It’s time to be a real witch, Gretchen.” She said as the four of us lowered back down to the ground.
