Daily Prompt: Fortune Wheel Of Life. #amwriting #excerpt #romancenovels

via Daily Prompt: Wheel

Wheel

I’ve not done a WordPress writing prompt for what feels like ages. Today’s word is wheel. For Yasmin life is like a wheel of fortune… here’s an excerpt from Lover’s Retreat released in July. More excepts can be read here.

CHAPTER ONE: FORTUNE WHEEL OF LIFE

Yasmin sits uncomfortably on the stiff chair in her late mother’s solicitor’s office, in Victoria central London.  Her hands are folded in her lap and her gaze fixes firmly on them. She can’t believe the news she has just heard, she is rich, very rich. Her mother left her entire estate to her only daughter.

Yasmin’s mother passed away in a restful sleep, she was diagnosed with lung cancer five years ago. It was a miracle to her and her family that her mother held on for so long. Mr. Daniels breaks the silence.

“Ms. O’Neil are you okay?”

Yasmin looks up from her lap.

“Oh yes, sorry I’m a little shocked. Have I understood right? Fifty thousand pounds cash and the four bedroom house?”

“Yes, correct Ms. O’Neil. Your mother had the house valued just before she passed, you can include three hundred thousand pounds for the house also.”

Mr. Daniels fixes Yasmin with a concerned look. He imagines a thirty something year old female who receives news that she is more than financially stable, would be over the moon with happiness. Yasmin’s body language is reserved and hard to read.

“Okay, thank you for the confirmation. So what happens next?”

Mr. Daniels removes his round framed glasses and leans back in his chair.

“Well it’s completely up to you Ms. O’Neil, you are the only beneficiary your mother was very clear in her will, you have access to the money. As for the house you decide how you wish to proceed.”

“Right, thank you. For now I think I’ll keep the house I’m…  was I should say living there with Mum. I’d like to hold on to it.”

“As you wish, my secretary will give you a call by Friday with an update. In the meantime, here is your copy of your mother’s will.”

Yasmin reaches over the large oak desk as she nervously reaches for her mother’s will.

“Thank you Mr. Daniels. I’ll see myself out.”

“It’s a pleasure, take care.”

Mr. Daniels offers Yasmin his hand which she shakes timidly across the large desk.

Yasmin rises from her seat and smooths over her brown curls, slightly frizzy from the afternoon drizzle and damp air.

Once outside on the pavement Yasmin is greeted with the hustle and bustle of London. City workers and tourists spring from all directions. She feels dizzy and suddenly hot, even though it’s December and less than ten degrees today.  For comfort she unzips her tattered old winter coat, and ducks her head under her coat from the light rain starting to fall again. Glancing around she quickly crosses the main road, she keeps an eye out for taxi drivers whizzing past the station. Once she is safely across the road, she heads inside Victoria station and makes her way over to Starbucks for a Latte. As Yasmin opens the door of the busy coffee shop she’s greeted with Christmas cheer. The décor inside reflects the holiday season with tinsel and Christmas songs playing softly in the background. The warmth from the coffee machines and human bodies are welcome in contrast to the crisp bitter December winds outside. Joining the queue, she looks around and wonders what she will do for Christmas this year, now her mother has passed. Is there much point in celebrating? She wonders.

“Hello madam, what can I get you today?” A tall, eastern European male smiles at Yasmin from behind the counter.

“Just a small Latte please.”

“Coming right up, is it to have here or take out madam?”

“I’ll have it here please.”

“And your name madam?”

“Yasmin.”

“Thank you it’s on its way.”

Yasmin watches him place her name on her cup. She pays for her drink and stands by the side of the till, she watches the baristas make quick work of her coffee, and hand over a steaming cup. Yasmin spots a seat over in the corner by the window and heads over. The warmth of her Latte and the caffeine hit relaxes her, as her mind starts to race over the last five years of her life. She was married and separated by the age of thirty two, technically she is still married. After just three years of a short lived marriage her husband up and left her. He was heartless and blunt in his reasons for deserting her, for two and a half years the pair had tried to conceive a child, test after test concluded that there was no fertility issue with either of them. Yasmin just could not fall pregnant. It put a massive strain on their relationship and marriage, their communication broke down and Yasmin became the nagging wife. Her and her husband’s lovemaking became a routine operation, with an aim of reproducing rather than for enjoyment. A month later her mother was diagnosed with cancer. It was a terrible time for Yasmin, she lost herself completely as she threw herself into her new role as sole care giver for her ill mother. Her work suffered, she disconnected with her friends, her appearance took on a life of its own. Most importantly her love and passion for dance slowly disappeared, she no longer had the time or desire to attend dance classes, or polish her ballet technique with a terminally ill mother.

On the odd occasion when she did somehow carve out the time or find the desire to attend the dance studio, she experienced blackouts of sound. This is what disturbed Yasmin the most, she feared she was losing her hearing.

Over the years her fear has materialised, she now is almost deaf in one ear. For five years, she has been hiding it as best as she can.  Quite soon after her blackouts started she learned to pay attention to lip movement when she is spoken to. She made up every excuse in the book internally for not going to the doctors. She was too busy, work was demanding, her mother’s care was more important.

For five years Yasmin put her mother’s care and needs before her own, now it shows physically. She feels less confident than she was eight years ago aged twenty nine when she married David. Back then she was proud of her toned ballerina’s figure, her petite five foot five frame would stand confidently, she wore the latest fashions, figure hugging dresses, sky scraper high heels and make up. These days she’d barely run a brush through her hair or put on some mascara. Life took a toll on Yasmin in a mean way. She faced all her life changing experiences alone mainly out of choice, she did not want to feel as though she was a burden on her girlfriends.

Looking out of the coffee shop window Yasmin’s mind reverts to her mother’s funeral. The day was grey and overcast, it drizzled as she stood by her mother’s open grave as her casket was lowered into the muddy soil. She feels she has done her mother proud, by giving her a send off that she would have wanted. An intimate service at the local Catholic church her mother attended each week without fail for the twenty years she lived at the same address in south London.

The service then moved over to the local cemetery in Nunhead for her burial and final goodbyes. Close family and friends attended on the day, they did their best to comfort her as her mother’s only child. Yasmin started to grieve heavily over her loss and lack of siblings to turn to.

“What am I to do now?”

Yasmin whispers out loud to herself in the corner as she sips her coffee and mulls over life.

Friday afternoon Yasmin stares at her laptop screen, she is now fifty thousand pounds richer than she was last night. Her mind boggles over why her mother never shared with her how much she had in savings. She glances away from her screen to look around the large kitchen, her late mother was so proud of it. With modern tiled floor, white work tops and fitted appliances, one thing her mother was known for is quality. Everything Mona did was done with style and flare, that was her mother. Yasmin’s phone buzzes on the glass table next to her, she smiles as she places the phone to her good ear.

“Hi Sebrina how are you?”

“I’m well Yas, but how are you? I’ve not heard from you in a while.”

“Yeah I fine, just taking each day as it comes.”

“Hmm, that’s the best way. Some days will be harder than others but you will get through it.”

“Thanks.”

“You’ve got to look forward now. A lot has changed, what are your plans? You must have a bucket list of things you’d love to do.”

“Funny you should say that, I’ve had a bucket list of things to do for as long as I can remember. I actually dug it out the other day.”

“Wow, interesting and what’s on the list?”

“Well, travel, dance goals and motherhood stuck out at me.”

“Great, there’s two there from the list you can work on right away, with the motherhood part don’t let the past turn you crazy.”

“Oh believe me I’m not! I don’t even have a man to work on that part of the to do list with.”

Both women chuckle down the phone.

“Yas I’m so glad you can see the bright side of life.”

“It’s either that or go crazy, I know which one I’d rather. But as it so happens I think I need a break, a long one too. The last five years I’ve been tied to London and the same routine. Not that I am resentful at all for caring for Mum.”

“Absolutely, no one can ever say you have been selfish for taking a break, no matter how long.”

“I’m thinking of going travelling for a while.”

“Where too? Sounds great.”

“I have no idea, that’s what I’m trying to work out, the world is a big place! But I could do with a beach, some sun and relaxing. The December weather is doing nothing for my mood.”

“So you won’t be around for Christmas?”

“I doubt it, who do I have to spend it with?”

“You’ve got me!”

“Thanks Sebrina but you have a husband and family, you don’t need a third while hanging on.”

“No way, don’t think that. You’re one of my oldest and dearest friends.”

“Aww, thanks all the same but I think I’ll pass.”

“Okay, your call.”

“If you need anything Yas, anything at all you just call okay?”

“Thanks of course I will, but I should be okay once I know where I’m heading. I’ll keep you posted.”

“Excellent, it’s just a quick call as I’m on lunch at work, I better get going I’ll talk to you soon okay?”

“Perfect speak to you soon.”

Yasmin put the phone down with a smile, what does the future hold for me runs through her mind. She contemplates the future fifty thousand pounds richer. Glancing at her bucket list she looks at the first point on the list, travel. Yasmin’s life has been more than isolated over the last five years, the last time she set foot on a plane was on her way to St. Lucia for her honeymoon with David. She smiles again, not at the honeymoon itself, anything to do with David is still painful, however her memories of the paradise she experienced in St. Lucia remain fond memories. The sounds, smells, feel and pace of the Caribbean makes her mouth water, as she recalls the ten days she spent on the island.

It had been her idea to visit the island, to seek half of her heritage from this exotic place. Her mother was born and bred in St. Lucia she came to the UK in her early twenties as a qualified nurse. A profession her mother loved to the core. Her father was a Scottish born doctor, he owned his own general practice in Hammersmith west London. The couple met while working in the medical profession when her father moved to London. The pair had spent a wonderful twenty years together, through thick and thin regardless of the stares and racial slurs they experienced while out together. In her mother’s day back in the sixties and seventies it was rare, and even frowned upon to enter an interracial marriage. Her father suddenly passed away following a serious heart attack. She was only young at the time, but she remembers her mother’s heartache as well as her own.

Yasmin opens a Google page and then types in “places to relax and discover yourself.” In the heat of the moment following her reflection on her life over the last five years, failed marriage and death of her mother she realises just how much she has lost touch with herself.  A list of potential links pop up, scanning through them she clicks on the third link “spiritual retreats in paradise rediscover one’s self.” The loaded webpage offers Yasmin a wealth of information of spiritualism, mediation and reconnecting with nature. She spends almost an hour reading through the information. She clicks on a link that directs her to a list of spiritual and self discovery retreats. The list is endless with locations in Thailand, Seychelles, China, and Sri Lanka all grabbing her attention. Her eyes settle on Sri Lanka, her mouth falls open as she gasps at the beauty of the island. The water is light aqua green with soft gold yellow sand, healthy green palm trees are scattered around the beach.

As she clicks again a second picture pops up showing a stream with a large grey elephant basking in the water, a local Sir Lankan sits on the back of the elephant smiling at the camera. A warm feeling comes over Yasmin as she smiles at the picture.

Pushing her chair back she heads over to the kettle and fills it with water, as she waits for it to boil she looks out the window. London’s weather has nothing new to offer this afternoon. The December weather is grey and dull, looking out at her mother’s pride and joy garden there are no flowers in bloom and the grass in wet. Flashbacks of her mother pulling up weeds, neatening hedges and organising plant pots spring to Yasmin’s mind. It pained her mother whenever she was too ill to tend to her pride and joy. All she could do was sit out and observe the garden. Yasmin would watch as her mother made note of what needed to be done, as soon as she could get on her feet. Yasmin turns her back with a sigh and starts to brew her tea, then heads back over to her laptop on the kitchen table.

She clicks on the “about this retreat” page and starts to indulge in the island of Sri Lanka. Before long she has learned about the country’s diverse inhabitants, religions and rich Buddhist heritage. She’s drawn into the country’s potential as a place to visit. As she reads on a link advertising self discovery retreats catches her eye.

Yasmin can’t believe her eyes a small price for such an amazing experience. She flicks back to her online banking page, to look again at the number of zeros on her balance. Smiling to herself she grabs her purse from her bedroom, and quickly rushes back to her laptop. She clicks on the 21st- 26th December 2016 date and books herself a place. She does not fancy a lonely Christmas, and over the last few days as she reflected on life, her new found fortune and sudden freedom she decides it is time to rediscover herself and have some fun.

Her boss has been very accommodating during the last five years, due to her care responsibilities Yasmin often requested time off for doctor’s appointments. Toward the end of her mother’s illness she’d often called in with little notice and informed him she will not make it into work, as her mother was too unwell to be left alone.

Yasmin’s job as a junior accounts manager for a women’s retail store is enjoyable most days, but if she had her way she’d be a dance teacher or a dancer touring all over the world showcasing her skill.

Glancing back down at her bucket list beside her, she has a sudden urge to take advantage of her new freedom, and desire to travel more widely comes over her. Travel is the number one item on her bucket list she wrote many years ago, as a fresh faced newlywed. After five years’ service with her employer she has the benefit of long term leave via a sabbatical or career break. Chewing the inside of her lip Yasmin picks up her cup of tea and ponders the possibility in more detail. It is a work related benefit, I won’t be asking too much of them runs through her mind. Glancing at the calendar she has just seven days until she leaves for Sri Lanka, her agreement with her boss on her return to work date following a period of compassionate leave to organise her mother’s funeral and pull herself together is open ended. She simply requested that she get in contact with an expected return date, once she has some time to adjust.

Yasmin firmly places down her cup of tea, glances outside the kitchen window to her right at the rain starting to fall. With a small smile she opens her email account and starts to draft an email to her boss. In her email she confirms she would like to cash in her work related benefit of sabbatical, and use half of it from the 21st December 2016 – 21st June 2017. Then return to London refreshed and ready to take on the world again. She apologises for the short notice, but given the circumstances surrounding her mother’s death and five years as her sole carer she hopes that he would understand.

Book Review: Poppy’s Proposal by Gavin Ough 4.5 Wonderful Stars! @gavinough1 #amreading #romancenovels

Have you ever had that feeling when you’re so glad you stumbled across a book? This is how I feel about Poppy’s Proposal. By chance my path crossed with this month’s Meet The Author feature, Gavin Ough, I’m so glad I’ve met him. You can read his featured interview here. Let’s get into the review!

 The Plot:

Genre: Contemporary romance/ chick-lit/ romantic comedy

This book is set in the UK at one of our popular and beautiful coastal seaside towns, Cornwell. I hate spoilers so I won’t give too much away. Poppy left school with not much in terms of qualifications. She’s now in her early thirties, and works in a hotel. Even though she’s surrounded by a great line up of entertaining co-workers and her girlfriend Rhea, life to her feels pretty mundane and boring. Her job is not exciting and her love life is non existent, until her path crosses with Aussie Greg and a rich high flying man, named Andrew. Both men take an interest in her, she can’t decide between the two. She decides to date both. It goes horribly wrong! There’s some drama and laughs once it does. But Poppy ends up in a happy place very unexpectedly.  Her personal life, love life and professional life all pick up. She has a great happy ever after, told in a very cleaver and unsuspecting way. She finds Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome and Poppy grows as a woman, with a massive life change.

My Review:

This book if you have not guessed by now is authored by a male writer! Massive props to Mr. Ough as he writes this genre so well, he should stick to it and write more. I like his style. Poppy’s proposal has everything a chick-lit/romantic comedy fan would expect from this genre. This genre is hard to write well and keep readers engaged, without being ridiculous. This has always been my “issue” with this type of romance. Uhh ahh you won’t find this with this author. There was laughter, fun, drama, and a massive dose of British humour which I loved. For me personally Poppy’s Proposal offered me what was missing in my reading life…good ol’ romantic humour! And lighthearted banter, wrapped up in a very enjoyable realistic story. This is the first romantic comedy/chick- lit story I’ve read, in probably four years when I thought about it. It reminded me why I need to read this genre more, and find good writers like Mr. Ough.

I really liked the setting of this book, a busy seaside town in the south west of the UK. I was drawn to the descriptions of the town and hotel, it resonated with me being British, and having visited Cornwell  just last summer too.

The character line up is diverse in terms of personalities and quirks. Aussie Greg, Techno Alan, Jane and Jimbo,  are just a few of the well developed characters. What I loved a lot is that this author was able to write these characters, with their relevant accents and be consistent and entertaining. The level of banter in this book is high. As a British reader I got the humour, at times I really did laugh our loud at it. Poppy is very entertaining with her thoughts and actions. Rhea her frank, straight talking best friend I connected with well.

Now, let’s get into Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome. The key feature for us romance junkies. What impressed me also, is this male author was able to write such a swoon worthy Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome. Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome was in the background, we meet him early as readers. For me he went from a background character to swoon worthy really well. He passed all my checklist points as a romance junkie. Handsome? Umm hmm I got the feeling via Poppy’s POV he was a strapping well built man, with great looks and nice eyes. Did he fight for his woman?  Umm hmm almost physically he did! *spoiler alert* I won’t say anymore. Was he good in bed? *Kim clears her throat*… well judging by the amount of sex Poppy had with him, I got the impression he was LOL. While the sex scenes were not detailed and graphic (which I would not really expect them to be, in this genre of romance), the author was able to use the great writer’s skill of “show, don’t tell.”  He has mastered this writer’s skill well, readers can draw a clear conclusion. Good job!

Overall, I’m giving Poppy’s proposal 4.5 well deserved stars as it is well written, has an engaging realistic plot, that I could see happening in real life. Especially the twists and turns once Poppy meets Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome. I love the setting, okay bias as I’m British but hey I connected. The entertainment factor is there. This author for a male romance writer, has done a brilliant job with this genre! And massive props should be given for his effort.  The only thing I would have liked to have seen more of, is more drama once Poppy’s busted for her double dating. The men seemed to neatly fall away. That said, it does not take away anything enjoyable from the reading as the story gears up toward a great HEA.

This is a great read for lighthearted romance/ contemporary and chick-lit fans. I will be reading more of this author’s work for sure. Especially once he drops his paranormal romance /sci- fi novel to be released soon I hope! I really look forward to it.

Reflection: What I write. #writerslife #amwriting

As much as I love to write fast paced, engaging and gripping stories. With strong characters and even some very dark  unsavoury ones. When it comes down to it, I’ll always be a romance writer at heart. My stories will always comeback to this no matter how gritty , controversial or full of drama they may get.

Yes I’ve knocked out some gritty characters in crime, and physiological themed stories as part of the weekly challenges  for Kim and Didi’s Suspenseful Collection.   And I’ve started to write a novel with this theme too! But this week as writers we have both put out  such a different feel. So different the story moved me to actual tears I just read it back to myself. I can’t recall I time I’ve actually been moved to tears, by something I partly wrote 🙂

Maybe it was the music, I dunno? Unintentionally at the moment I have Magic FM on the radio. If you’re not from the UK, you might not  know that this station plays some of the most relaxing feel good songs. I love to write with it in the background to focus. Around this time in the evening 9:00 p.m it gets a little soppy! It’s called ” Mellow Magic.” This song came on, I actually shed a tear (or a few) while reading the story. Good ol’ Whitney! It fits the story so well.

As I said earlier on today it’s a real close call between week four, and week one as my favourite story so far. I loved creating both pieces of fiction. As a romance author, I sincerely hope you enjoy what Didi and I came up with. And I thank her openly for the decision (not mine) to do a romance theme week. Because love really does concur all.

Meet The Author: Ms. Ava Sterling – Erotica Author #amreading #amwriting #author

It’s the 25th of the month! That means I have another author for you to meet. This month it’s erotica author Ms. Ava Sterling. Ava caught my eye last year, we started to follow each other’s author site. What made me take note of Ava is 1. her genre, I have so much respect for writers who can comfortably write a good sex scene. Erotica  is my guilty pleasure when it comes to reading. 🙂  and I hate it when people call it “smut” it’s not. As a romance author myself I write the odd sex scene (okay I write a lot). I like to see how others create emotion and sensuality  (which is more along the lines of how I go about writing). I also  like to see how others create  down right dirty red hot scenes! …  Ava ‘s writing is red hot! 2. she is soooo damn productive as a writer. I remember liking one of Ava’s new release posts, then within a few days there was another one. I said to myself didn’t Ava just release one the other day?? Ms. Sterling knocks them out rapidly, I love it.  I  had the pleasure of reading a good few of Ava’s stories. The first time was while at the airport passing time in April.. I was sat in front of my mum, each time she raised her eyes to me from her newspaper I hid my smile and raised my tablet . :). I also got lucky one Saturday night, I decided not to write that night, I wanted to read and escape. In my inbox was one of Ava’s stories just waiting for me. I indulged again.  Ava is very sexy, her scenes are hot, steamy and well written. I as a woman can relate to what I’ve read.  Let’s get to know her style… Ms. Sterling over to you.

Hello nice to meet you! Tell us a bit about you where are you from and other than writing what else do you enjoy?

Thank you, Kim! It’s great to be on. I’m from the Midwest area of the United States. It’s fairly moderate when it comes to temperature and it can get a little humid in the summer. Other than writing, I enjoy running, watching movies, archery, and reading.

How did you start writing? What was your inspiration to create?

I started writing like a lot of people have, by just jotting down story ideas and wandering into it from there. I get asked a lot whether my stories are based off of my personal experiences, and sure, some of them are. I imagine it would be difficult for writer not to write about his or her personal experiences at least in some way.

Kim: *lifts her eyebrows* okay… hmm. Ya know I’ve never actually created a sex scene based on my own experience- consciously. Or have I??

What genre do you enjoy reading?

I try to read widely. Of course, I read the expected erotica and romance, but I also enjoy fantasy and even some science fiction.

Kim: I really respect paranormal and fantasy stuff, it takes a special kind of creativity to create a whole new world. I like paranormal romance  too.

How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?

Oh gosh, everything. It’s an experience publishing your first book, and you never quite go about it the same way, for the better. Probably more accurately, my writing and publishing process changed quite a bit after the first dozen short stories, as it became more systematic and more of a natural process.

Kim: yes, agreed. The first one is like child birth, slow and painful in places.

What has been your most proud moment as an author?

My favorite moment as an author is receiving positive feedback about my stories. There’s just something about that moment when someone reaches out and says that they like what you created. It’s a natural high that fuels many authors.

Kim: nods her head * smiles*

Was there ever a time you wanted to pick up your laptop, and then launch it out the window with frustration?

It might be a boring answer, but not really. Although I do enjoy writing actual, believable plots into my short stories, because they aren’t long, I don’t have to concentrate much on intricate plot threads. I just focus on the characters and how they interact, and it seems to go pretty naturally from there.

Kim: I’m so jealous, NEVER Ava are you sure?? I’m happy for you that you’ve never experienced this.  You have a very good point though, when I wrote A Stranger in France (90,000 words) I almost launched mine right out the kitchen window, a few times LOL.

Am I the only one who gets hung up on commas? Do they make you go blah! when you’re writing?

They used to trip me up a lot more than they do now. I used to be a prolific comma putter-inner. In other words, I would overuse commas. I’ve gotten better about it over time.

Kim: I’m trapped in between putter-inner and taker-outta. Blah!

What three tips would you give any aspiring writer?

These days, it seems to be about volume. Quality will always be important, but with so many self published authors cranking out stories and novels so quickly, it seems like an author needs more out there than ever before.

My main advice would be to keep going beyond what is comfortable for you. Continue even when it seems fruitless and you want to stop. My two other tips would be to keep an eye to the market and what sells and to develop a solid social media presence.

Kim: Sounds good to me. Especially encouragement to keep going.

What does “success” look like to you? When would you say “damn, I’ve made it baby!”

For me, success would be living comfortably solely on the income of my writing. I don’t need or expect a lot, just being able to pay my bills would be fine with me, but not having a boss breathing down my neck is the ultimate dream. I’m a very independent person, and I would much rather perform for my readers then perform for a boss at a day job.

Kim: Ditto.. day jobs suck when you’re a writer. It’s always nice to be paid for what you love doing.

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

Ha. This question holds a bit more meaning when asked of an erotica author. I’d love to be cheeky and say that I have performed long hours of research for my books, but really, I just write about either my personal experiences, experiences I wish I’ve had, or experiences I would rather not have because I’m not brave enough but like to explore in a story.

Kim’s reaction: Practical “hands on” research as an Erotica author could be fun.

What are you working on now? What will you release next?

Right now (today actually!) I’ll be publishing a story about a woman who receives a happy ending from her male massage therapist. It’s my first massage therapy story, and I’m pretty excited about that. My last published story is about a married couple who decide to visit a swinger’s club. It’s their first experience in the swingers world, and of course they’re shy and unsure of themselves. Luckily, they find another couple who takes them under their wing.

Kim: Thanks for the update! Now I’m wondering how much of  what I’ve read, and will read in the future is real??

Where can we get your books?

I try to put up my books on as many places as possible, such as Amazon, Kobo, Barnes & Noble’s, Apple, Smashwords, etc. That way, it removes all barriers from anyone around the world who wants to read my books. The best place to view a list of my stories is on my website. I also have a grid view for even quicker perusing.

What would you like readers to know?

That I appreciate each and every one of them. It is for them I write, and without them, none of this would be possible.

Kim: aww how nice Ava.

And that’s a wrap, it’s been lovely meeting Ava this month. It’s official I love this woman, her stories and bravery.  I will for sure be reading more.  If you’d like to take a look at this author’s ” toe curling stories” and indulge in a little connect with her below.

 Excerpt from House of Pleasure:

Is this for real?” Grace flipped over the gold embossed invitation in her hand, the parchment paper thick and expensive beneath her fingers. Whoever made it must’ve spent a fortune. “A swingers club? Really?”

She eyed her husband curiously, watching as he pulled off his belt. Was he serious? They had mentioned branching out to spice things up and keep their marriage interesting, but this was quite a move without a baby step in-between.

Steve nodded, removing his sports coat. “Yeah.” He took a seat beside her, the mattress dipping down under him. He loosened his tie, pulling it off to toss on the chair by the bed, along with his blazer. “We talked about this.” His voice was melodic, soothing. It was the thing that always pulled her in, lulling her into a state of compliance.

“Yeah, but I didn’t think you’d tell your friends!” Her tone was incredulous, but not upset. To say she was surprised would be an understatement. “Who all knows?” Studying his face, she awaited his reply. Boys and their locker room talk, she thought to herself. Strangely, that thought gave her a little jolt. What all did his friends know about her? When they had visited, did they envision her in all sort of slutty scenarios? Grace wasn’t sure she hated the idea. What would it be like being passed around all his friends?

Jesus, she definitely needed to lay off the erotica.

“Only Pete.” He slipped off his sleek, black shoes next. As an ad executive, Steve dressed his best every day, and she loved watching him peel off each layer of his designer suits. “He told me he had a way to help, then the next day he came to work with that.”

His gaze scanned her expression as he gestured to the invitation still clasped in her hand. “Do you know how hard something like this is to get? We’re going, aren’t we?” His voice lifted like an eager schoolboy. She knew how excited this topic made him; he’d mentioned it every night since it first came up. “Pete tells me it’s the cream of the crop. Serious business. Everyone is vetted, so things are safe. I know how careful you are. Background checks and such. I think they even have guards on duty.”

“I’m guessing we’re having background checks done on us as we speak?” It was smart, though; she had to admit that. There was a sense of security in taking a chance on sexual matters when they were handled by responsible adults.

He moved the hair from her neck, and she shivered. “Probably.”

“So, Masquerade Night, huh?”

She thought about all the variety that offered and the idea of shopping crept into her mind. A lovely new dress. Something sleek and tight, clinging to every curve. Something clandestine had always appealed to her. A mask gave a sense of anonymity and allowed one the excuse to act like someone else, to indulge the parts that were usually kept hidden.

“This coming Friday.” He smiled, trailing the backs of his fingers over her freckled shoulder before pulling down the thin strap of her camisole and placing a kiss there. “I’ll even buy you something new and sexy.” His teeth raked across her skin. “What d’ya say, baby girl?”

Excerpt from Cougar’s Fling.

“I hope you took him for all he’s got.” Brenda gestured with a piece of cranberry biscotti, then dunked it daintily into her coffee. “You gave him ten years of your life! The best years in my opinion. The least he can do is shell out alimony.”

Evie’s stomach twisted into a knot, a never-ending Celtic knot by the feel of it. Thirty-five and already divorced. It wasn’t what she had envisioned when she met Richard in college. “Can we stop talking about this, please?” All of it was beginning to give her a headache.

It was enough the divorce papers had just been finalized that morning; she didn’t need the constant reminder of how crap her life had turned. She merely wanted to move on. Richard was the past. Who knew what her future would be–hopefully something better. Younger. Blond with muscles and maybe some tattoos. She smiled to herself.

A bundle of brochures lay in front of her on their small table for two. Traveling, she hoped, would help life make some sense again. A few months abroad just to get a new perspective on things. The problem was, she couldn’t decide on where to go.

“Help me make a decision,” she pleaded with her friend. “You know me, I’m thirty shades of indecisive. I’m the type of girl who spends ten minutes in the front of the freezer section just trying to decide what flavor ice cream to get.”

Brenda sighed, clearly bothered that she wasn’t allowed to bash Richard. That was one of her favorite pastimes. “What are your choices?” Her fingers spread out the various pamphlets as she looked them over.

“Prague, London, Jakarta, Melbourne, and Toronto.”

“Eh, not Toronto. That’s still North America. You want to go somewhere different so it feels more like a vacation.”

She has a good point, Evie thought.

“London’s nice,” a soft male voice said, drifting from behind them. “I was there last summer. Had a blast.”

Evie turned her head, and her gaze met with one of Richard’s former students. He was young, sporting a baby face and a mop of tousled, brown hair. But she remembered him. Richard used to tutor him at their house during the kid’s senior year. That was two years ago, right when things started to head south.

“Mrs. Leeds, yeah?” the boy asked as he bussed a table near them.

He barely looked the same now. His lanky body had filled out nicely to be lean, taut muscle. The white T-shirt he wore clung to his arms, displaying enough bulk to be muscular, but not beefy. She always had a soft spot for men like that. Runners. Gymnasts. Swimmers. Lithe, agile bodies were incredibly sexy to her.

“Hey…um, I’m sorry.” She shook her head, pulling herself from her thoughts. “I’ve forgotten your name.”

He wore a blue apron, and in the center of it was the logo of the coffee house; she couldn’t make out the name on his placard, however. He smiled the most attractive grin she’d ever seen. It lit up his entire face, causing his eyes to crinkle at the corners. That always made her melt.

“Craig.”

After tossing the discarded cups into a nearby garbage can, he stepped closer to her but stopped short of extending his hand. “It’s really great seeing ya again.”

Brenda chose that moment to clear her throat, announcing her presence. “Who’s your little friend, Evie?” Her voice dripped with curiosity. Evie could only imagine what she was thinking, and it couldn’t have been good.

There was a long wait I was prepared, I went  along to central London with my laptop. I sat and started to work on my current romance novella Havana Heat. Here is a preview from a chapter, things are heating up over in Cuba’s capital Havana for my hero Detective Sebastian Garcia and my heroine Melinda Jones….

CHAPTER SIX: HAVANA HEAT

Sebastian takes Melinda’s hand as they leave the crowded dance floor of Casa De Amigos. They weave their way in and out of the crowds. During their time spent in the bar the crowd has built up. The bar is now busy with local Cubans and tourists enjoying the ambience of the bar’s cheap local cocktails and beers, wide screen TV showing an international soccer game and couples dancing to salsa on the small dancefloor.

As they exit the bar into the late afternoon sunshine, the humid heat does nothing to cool down their perspiring bodies hot from all their dancing.

“Sebastian, which way from here? I have no idea where I’m going.”

Sebastian looks down at Melinda fanning herself with one hand. With the sunshine on her smooth brown skin, Sebastian can’t deny to himself the attraction he feels toward her. His eyes sweep up and down her curvy body as he admires her sundress and wedge heels.

“Hmm, let’s try this direction.”

“Okay, let’s go.”

The pair take off in a direction away from where they came from when they left their hotel and stumbled on Casa De Amigos bar. Walking along the hot pavement they admire the colourful array of buildings and downtown hotels they pass as they walk deeper into the town.  Local youths pass them on moped bikes zooming down the main road. Within a ten minute walk the sea comes into view in the distance.

“Well, look what we’ve found.” Smiling Melinda tugs at Sebastian’s arm.

“C’mon let’s go check out the beach, we have time to have a stroll before heading back.”

“What about food?”

“That’s what the hotel’s for.” Melinda calls over her shoulder as she takes off jogging toward the beach. Sebastian smiles, then ups his pace to keep up with her.

“Wow, this looks like some kind of paradise.”

Melinda kicks off her wedge heels as she steps onto the warm sand. Sebastian joins her removing his comfortable plimsols.

“Sure does, the water is so blue.”

The pair walk farther onto the beach toward the water’s shore to allow the water to wash over their feet as they walk along.  Melinda and Sebastian take in the ambience of the beach. Palm trees slightly lean to one side as they sway in the light sea breeze. The sand is  clean with a bright off white colour. The beach is calm but busy with sun worshipers stretched out on their beach loungers and groups of friends playing volley ball. A few teenagers splash around in the sea making fun of each other. Taken back by all of  Santa Maria del Mar beach’s beauty the pair lower their shades, as they walk along the coastline with warm sea water washing over their feet at a leisurely pace. As they walk farther up the coastline a secluded area of rockery comes into view, the pair head over and settle themselves on the sand.

“So tell me a bit more about yourself Sebastian, other than work how do you spend your time?”

Sebastian thinks for a moment, of late his free time has been consumed with thoughts of his late girlfriend Anna and morning over her absence, and what he could have done to ensure Anna felt needed and valued as his partner. A vision of Anna appears in his mind’s eye as he stares out into the crystal clear aqua water. Sebastian rubs the back of his neck and tries to push his vision of Anna’s face to one side.

“Ah, to be honest … not much. I guess I’m kinda boring.”

Melinda let’s out a small laugh and looks up at Sebastian.

“I’m sure you’re not, seriously you have no hobbies or interests?”

“Hmm, I like music— a lot, and to work out I guess, books interest me too.”

“What kind of music and books? I love them both.”

“I listen to a lot of classical, flamenco and modern music. When it comes to books obviously, crime is my thing.”

“Of course, Mr. Detective. And …”

“And that’s about it Melinda I never realised how boring I am until you asked me that question.”

The pair crack up laughing.

“No girlfriend back in London either?”

Sebastian looks down at Melinda sitting by his side, his reflection in her large oversized sunglasses stare back at him. Damn she looks hot in those shades runs through his mind. suddenly he feels overwhelmed and confused. He loves Anna and is still not quite over her loss, but at the same time his attraction to Melinda is becoming more obvious to him. Her style, beauty, rhythm to a salsa beat, and bubbly sense of humour appeal to him in a major way.

“Did I say something wrong Sebastian? You’re looking at me like I’m some kind of alien.”

Sebastian snaps out of his weird trance of heartache and confusion over his late girlfriend and lust over the ebony skinned beauty, with great potential by his side.

“No sorry… I don’t have a girlfriend as such no.”

“As such? What does that mean?”

“It’s complicated—I”

With disappointment Melinda cuts Sebastian off as she gazes out at the deep aqua sea.

“Hmm, it always is with you men isn’t it.”

Thoughts of all the wasted dates she had been on over the last year run through her mind.

“No, I mean it’s complicated as she… she died almost one year ago.”

Melinda looks up at Sebastian as he stares off into the sea again.

“Oh, my Sebastian I’m sorry I didn’t mean to—”

“It’s okay, honestly by now I should be coming to terms with my loss. Well at least that’s what my shrink tells me.”

“You see a doctor?”

“Yeah, I have been for a while now, he helps but I know that the main bulk of the work to deal with my grief is down to me.”

“It’s hard, grieving is different for everyone.”

Melinda places a sympathetic hand on Sebastian’s upper shoulder for comfort. The comfort comes as a surprise to him. He takes her hand in his and squeezes it, before he knows what’s come over him he places a light kiss on her hand, then slowly makes his way farther up her arm with gentle kisses. Melinda does not resist him as he leans in farther and places a light kiss on her collar bone. The warm light breeze, aqua sea, lazy palm trees mixed with too much Tequila and beer arouses them both. Without hesitation, the pair lock lips in a deep passionate kiss. Sebastian takes full control as he explores Melinda’s mouth with his tongue while running his hand up her right thigh. Her skin feels smooth and clammy to touch as he raises the hem of her sundress and parts her thighs. As his hand travels farther up her thigh she hesitates for a moment conscious of where they are sitting, under a palm tree fully exposed to passers-by, even though they are sitting in a much more secluded area of the beach, they left the crowds behind. Melinda breaks away from his kiss, not because she wants to but more for the sake of embarrassment should a passer-by see them. Sebastian’s kisses are soft and gentle. It feels very much to Melinda like one of the sincerest kisses she has had in a long time.

“Let’s go for a swim.”

Sebastian laughs out loud.

“A swim? With no bathing suits?”

Melinda give him a cheeky smile as she lowers the straps of her sundress, then stands up and steps out of it. She reveals a matching lime green bra and panties set, the colour emphasises her smooth chocolate skin tone.

“Who needs bathing suits, there’s no one here and this could pass for a bikini did you see what those other girls were wearing back there?”

Melinda points back toward the direction they came from and laughs.

“No shit, those bikinis were out there.”

“C’mon last one in pays for the taxi home.”

Sebastian gets on his feet and removes his cotton shirt and shorts as quick as he can. Glancing around nervously he dumps his clothing and Rolex watch next to Melinda’s sundress and races down to the shore. He catches up to Melinda and scoops her up from behind and runs with her down farther toward the shore and into the warm aqua sea. She playfully screams and shouts protesting to be put down, secretly the thrill makes her heart race. Melinda can’t remember the last time she let herself go and had some fun, done something crazy and completely let go. Today, almost five thousand miles from her west London home is the day she let go. With a total stranger. It occurs to her that her safety could have been at risk by wandering off with a strange man on an island. She looks on the flip side, then again Sebastian is a Detective, from her home town in London too. He’s  there to serve and protect the public— you can’t get more safe than that.

Playfully launching Melinda into the water Sebastian dives in and picks her up again by her legs this time. Playful screams escape Melinda as she holds onto him as tight as she can and looks down at him, she wraps her legs around his body as he cradles her with a firm grip on her behind.

“You are crazy Sebastian!”

“Me crazy? What do you call going for a swim with no bathing suit, in broad day light?”

The pair crack up laughing as Sebastian lowers her into the water to her feet, they stand face to face in the warm sea with slight waves crashing around them. Sebastian’s six-foot-three well- built frame towers over Melinda’s five- foot-six height. Melinda looks up into Sebastian’s large brown eyes and for the millionth time she takes in the handsome Spaniard’s face with sharp features, his low cut hair and great body, large brown eyes, tanned olive skin now even more golden from the strong Caribbean sun.  Taking a deep breath to regulate her heartbeat she melts at the sight of him, standing in front of her with the strong sunlight behind him. Melinda’s senses are awakened by his playful side and the paradise surrounding them. Her lust over the gorgeous Spaniard kicks in. Taking the lead starting from his elbows placed at his side under the water, she runs her palms upwards over his strong toned arms, toward his shoulders, as she stops at his shoulders she takes a step forward in the water into Sebastian’s personal space. Without removing her eyes from his intense gaze staring down at her she slowly continues to move her palms over his chest area, her heart flips at the curves which define his toned torso. Sebastian responds as her hands settle on his both sides of his equally toned waist. Leaning toward her into her personal space farther he gently bends down and blesses her with another one of his gentle loving kisses. They embrace in a passionate hug in the water with Melinda’s arms wrapped around his neck and Sebastian holding her at her waist. Sebastian is not sure if it’s the warmth of the Caribbean sea and strong hot sun on his back or Melinda’s curves he explores under the water that bring him to a complete arousal, his need to feel her more intimately take over as he slowly moves both of his hands from her curvy waist line then stops under her ample bust line. With ease, he lifts the underneath section of her lime green bra now soaked and fully exposing the outline of her erect nipples as the thin material clings to her breast…. TO BE CONTINUED.
