The Lights Are On… But Nobody Is Home, Damn Creativity Block! #writerslife

Writer's Block

Hello everyone,

How are you all doing? How is November treating you so far? I hope it’s going well. For me I can hardly believe that we are two weeks in! Which means Christmas is coming and I can’t wait.

Since I last wrote a personal blog post (which feels like many moons ago), I have completed book #1 of my next romance series Romance in The City. It’s in editorial and with Beta Readers. Last night I sat down to continue writing for The Suspenseful Collection volume #2 with my co -author Didi Oviatt.  Do you know I could not write a Goddamn thing LOL. I don’t know what came over me. Have I been writing too much romance? I felt like I lost my suspense and thriller edge (if that’s possible) ….I just got distracted by the Internet and started watching make-up videos on YouTube…. so I gave up and focused on my book cover instead, for the romance novella. I brainstormed a few ideas and felt a bit better for doing something productive.

So far, for Nanowrimo I slowed a little in week #2. But this weekend the aim is to get back into it.  If you’re participating in Nanowrimo how are you doing? Are you knee deep in words or struggling creatively?  Either way may the creativity be with you this November!

Any tips on how to claim back my suspenseful edge? I was trying to craft a wicked crime scene with strong characters… something I pride myself on actually !  Last night every story I started I deleted. In my head I said I can’t send that to Didi to finish writing on…. If I do…..

Before: Didi

Didi (1)

After reading….

She’ll get on Skype and be like‘ WTF is that Kim, you expect me to finish writing that. LOL’

The lights are on, but nobody is home! Who stole my suspenseful edge give it back!! I hardly experience writer’s block, but when you write blindly with a co-author as a ‘panster’ , with no planning or discussion it’s such a challenge. Didi is so great at this her writing style is more panster than mine. Help!! The next collection has a lot to live up to from the first lot of stories, I am determine to blow you all away again. I’ll give it a few hours and get back behind the laptop, hopefully with my creativity strapped to my pants this time.

Two Days Into National Novel Writing Month and I’m done!! #amwriting #NANOWRIMO

Shower_Meme_for_Writers-1

Whooo I’m done! Well okay I cheated a little bit as I’m revamping a 13,000 word short story     but the aim of National Novel Writing Month (Nanowrimo) is to ‘write a novel in thirty days’. I’ve just finalised a  romance novella story, renamed it and it’s now almost a 20,000 word story. The next mission is to finish off my third Romance Set In Paradise novella and The Suspenseful Collection Volume #2 with Didi Oviatt. I’m on a roll.

I have a question for you all, in your view what makes a good book cover? The people? Font? Teaser? What?? I’m in the process of now thinking up possible designs, while my manuscript is with Beta Readers and my editor. Vote on the poll below if you have a view or drop me a comment.

Well, I better crack open the next manuscript….

Throwback Thursday! & Writing My Inspiration. Who remembers this one #throwback @britneyspears

So last Sunday I announced that I am revamping my short novella story I published as part of an anthology, with my old publishers of the original work. I’m republishing my novella as the first book of my  next romance series. Anyway,  I was looking for a song as I was writing (revamping) a scene where a female character… dances on a pole ! What better song to do a sexy dance to than one of Britney’s finest ‘ Slave 4 U.’

I remember when this song came out years ago and I saw the video, I was mesmerised by the routine Britney does at 1.36 into the video. It’s a bit like Madonna’s Vogue. I jumped on YouTube and watched choreographers teach the steps in this section of the video in slow motion… yep actually learned Britney’s famous moves,  it took a lot a practice as Britney is such a great dancer this routine is HARD to say the least it’s so fast. While I could not do it as well as her obviously,  back then I managed to remember the routine and work up a great sweat burning a few calories.  I love me some Britney, and so glad she has turned her life around and being a great mama to her boys, regardless of what the haters have said in the past. I always rooted for her to get on track. Thanks for the inspiration while writing last weekend Britney.  I’m throwing it back musically with classic Britney at her best.

Throwback Thursday x2! Who remembers this one…. #throwback #oldschool #music

The story behind this second track I’m throwing back this week is… well…. it’s a bit embarrassing really. I’m throwing it back just for fun. I was clearing out some old clothes, and tried to squeeze into a pair of old jeans I found. They don’t fit ! *cringe* I guess I’m just too  “bootylicious for ya baby.”  This song came to mind. 🙂  The jeans are on the charity donation pile.

Thank you Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, Nikki Minaj , Jennifer Lopez, and Lil’ Kim the rapper  for shaking things up! Celebrating all the bootylicious women in the world this throwback Thursday. Be proud of that booty! You are not ‘fat’ it’s sexy some would say. I remember when this song came out back in the day, Destiny’s Child were at their best and Beyonce was in the spotlight for her ‘bootylicoius’ figure. Well done ladies for your achievements, and well done Beyonce for embracing what nature gave you, it has made you a lot of money in the process. Ladies shake your thing to Destiny’s Child this Thursday.

 My Review: 4 Stars

Thank you to Enchanted Book Promotions for an ARC, in exchange for an honest review. And thank you to the author for her interview which you can read here.

Well, I’m so glad I stuck with Love on The Forbidden Side! This is a slow burner story ( for me), from my reading experience. All the action starts at just over half way through. That said that does not mean this is a boring read, oh no! 🙂 This author has a snappy, witty, sassy writing style which went down well with me. I found myself smiling and breaking out in small girly giggles at times. The main character Julie is very likable as a woman, The hero Mr. Tall Blond and Handsome, is also a very swoon worthy kinda guy! He fights for his woman literally.

I’m giving Love on the Forbidden Side four wonderful stars as I really liked the writing style of this author,  full of sass, the villain was VERY well developed and believable. I had an instant dislike toward him,  his cold hearted resentful ‘mad man’ attitude was put across well. Given that I’d say the characters are well developed.  This is a series and I have not read the first book, but it did not stop my enjoyment by not knowing back story. This author showed the sexual tension between the hero and the heroine really really well!  Overall I enjoyed reading this romance, I would have loved more action in the first fifty percent, but that said it ends on a high note with a beautiful HEA considering all the drama of the last half of the book. Worth a read, and I would read more of this author’s work for sure I think I’m a fan of Mariah !

Title: The Goblin King: Part 1

Author: A.E. Blair

Genre: LGBT Romance / dark fantasy

Jasper Woodworth expects the summer of 1963 to be filled with thunderstorms and the comfort of his childhood home. He’s prepared for the attention of his doting mother, for dazzling parties, for whispered rumors of Briarford’s townspeople.

Everything changes upon meeting his mother’s new tenant: the mysterious and ethereal Harlan Winters. Harlan is entitled. He speaks in riddles, and he uses half-truths like bait on a fishing wire. What’s worse? He won’t explain himself, or his intentions, or his hypnotic interested in Jasper.

Overwhelmed by suspicion and a strange attraction, Jasper’s dreams take a turn for the unusual. He dreams of hands roaming his body. He dreams of Harlan’s warm, golden skin and those unearthly opalescent eyes.

Enabled by Harlan, Jasper finds himself tumbling down a steep cliff, rolling in his obsession and lust as they twist into something new, something he doesn’t understand. The only way to gather the answers he seeks is to confront Harlan directly, but how does one trap a supernatural entity?

Author Bio

A.E. Blair is currently setting her keyboard alight with typing speeds in Orlando, Florida, but she’s been writing ever since she could hold a crayon upright on construction paper. Inspired by 80s fantasy movies and anime, she’s often dreamed of spiriting herself away to another world – and becoming supernatural royalty certainly wouldn’t hurt.

While A. E. is no stranger to writing, having gotten her start with fanfiction, The Goblin King: Part I is her first novel, and is expected to span six parts. In her spare time, A. E. likes to dabble in screenwriting, playwriting, and acting.

 Book Excerpt

The courtyard is vast, far larger than the garden in my back yard. Several yards away in every direction, a tall brick wall stretches, adorned at the top ornaments of white plaster. The sun sits high in the sky, casting down bright white rays onto the scene before me.

Birds chirp in the distance. Not the hoarse cawing of seagulls nor the shrill squawks of crows. Sparrows, maybe. Something high-pitched but pleasant. Almost a song. The wind carries the melody around me, and I close my eyes, my head tilting back. Around me, I hear the rustling of leaves, and I can see their lush greens and vivid colors winding around every structure, towering above me.

Sweat drips down the back of my neck, sticks my hair to the skin. To my left, there’s a fountain. It’s familiar – almost. Not quite. I follow the cracks in the plaster around the statue’s body, confident, as though they’re roads and I know where they lead. The cracks end at the statue’s headless neck, the plaster sheer, as though it had always been this way. As though it had never been broken. Water flows from the neck, clear, and my eyes follow it back down the statue’s body. It slips against the statue, turns white, then clear, then the sun hits it and colors explode from the water, every part of the spectrum, a cauldron of iridescent rainbow by the time it pools at the bottom, at the statue’s feet.

The clang of metal. Two cymbals crashing. My head jerks to the source of the sound, and who should be there to greet me but Mr. Winters?

His eyes are dark this time. I peer into them, expecting to see that strange, shimmering paleness, the same which curses the fountain’s water. He watches me, his eyes glued to me, and I take a step back. I try to. I try to lift my leg, but it’s rooted to the cobblestone beneath me.

Mr. Winters watches me, and I watch him. To his credit, he can take what he gives.

In his hands, a strange instrument rests. A wide circle, hollow, with a smaller, circular metal piece in the center. He beats it against the palm of his hand, his eyes unblinking. His shirt, white linin, lies open against his chest.

Beneath the hot sun, his skin shimmers, tan becoming pure gold.

I open my mouth to speak, but I can’t conjure the sound. My vocal cords don’t come into contact; there’s nothing but the air moving through my windpipe. My hand claps to my throat and I pin my eyes back on Mr. Winters, my mouth hanging open.

Mr. Winter’s mouth spreads into a smirk.

“Drink,” he says, and he follows it with a beat of his instrument.

I frown. I glare. I stand my ground. Mr. Winters nods to the fountain, keeping perfect time with his music.

“Drink,” he says again, and I cast my gaze back to the fountain. The water bubbles from the statue’s neck, and I watch it as it flows down its body. The pearly substance at the bottom becomes enchanting, mesmerizing, hypnotizing.

Without thinking, I reach down, and I let my fingers play in the iridescent water.

I confess myself quite the bachelor, so I can’t attest to personal experience, but those who shy away from marriage, from love unconditional… I’m afraid they’re shying away from eternity,” he says, and between his pretentious proclamations at the dinner table and vague threats, I never knew Harlan Winters to be a poet.

I have to recover.

I bite, “You won’t live forever, then,” and I throw it like a weapon toward him. If he wants to be a bachelor, perhaps he has to pay the price.

“Jasper!” Maman scolds. Harlan only laughs. He looks away, but my eyes stay on him.

“No, I suppose he’s right,” he considers, his head nodding from side to side as he considers it. A lock of silver hair falls into his eyes. “I’d be foolish to include myself in that.”

I want to be satisfied, but his words carry a melancholy that isn’t lost on me, that settles heavy over my shoulders. Harlan turns to me and smiles.

“Will you live forever, Jasper?”

I spit steel into my voice as I answer, “That’s impossible.”

The intensity of my defense is apparent, an elephant forcing its way through the walls, leaving nothing but rubble and carnage behind, but somehow, I can’t stop the fury. I’ve come for dinner, at his request. Do I truly deserve this conversation? And so early in the meal?

Harlan takes it in stride. He says, “I hope you aren’t destroying your chances.”

I take a breath to calm myself, and I reach for the bottle of wine. I take my time pouring myself a glass.

“I haven’t the slightest idea what forever feels like,” I tell him, focusing on the way the wine flows from the bottle like a waterfall. “I can’t miss something when I don’t know what it is.”

“Look up,” is Harlan’s response.

My glass full, I set the bottle back upright, and I cast my gaze toward the ceiling. I frown. There’s nothing there but wooden rafters. Harlan laughs.

“Not like that,” he says. “Not quite.” He crosses his arms across the table, settling in, mischief and folly on his face. I find myself leaning in, my neck craning toward him as he says, “I speak of the stars. When you see them, pinpricks of light against that vast darkness, never-ending – that’s the closest thing to eternity that humans can imagine.”

He lifts his glass and takes a drink of wine, his smile secretive, knowing. Jocelyn studies her menu, and I sit, transfixed by the man across the table. I want to pull more from him, more words, an explanation, but he stays quiet.

My New Release: Exciting News! #amwriting #romance #amreading

coming-soon-1898936_1280

Afternoon all,

It’s dark already and it is only 6:00p.m London time, autumn has truly set in. So, you probably remember I wrote a story for a anthology called Code Redhead- A Serial Novel,  with thirteen other great authors. My old publisher donated the sales revenue to charity for a year, I was thrilled to use my passion to write to help a charity cause and raise money for  cancer, this was in 2016 … remember? Good.  Well I checked my contact and it has expired, I’ve decided not to republish my work as a standalone under them, I now I have my rights back over my work. So what does this mean?… Instead  I will revamp this story a bit then it will be book #1 of another romance series I have in mind. e.g. my new release! As well as my  Romance Set In Paradise series, I want to write a some romance novellas set in cities around the world… more like ‘sin in the city’ to be exact, these stories will be a little steamy. 🙂

I was going to send my work out on query to other publishers and agents, then after some thought I realised  as it has already been published once (and I don’t plan to re-write the whole story I rather like it as it is, I’ll just expand it as the word limit all authors had for the anthology was only 13,000… tiny!) Most publishers won’t republish in this case, as some of it has already been published once… never mind I’m happy to do my own thing! This one will be a self-publish to kick off the series.

Right now, I looking for Beta Readers to add to my list I already have. I wish to send out a draft of this short steamy novella over the next few weeks, once I’ve combed over it, Beta Reader feedback  would be great. If you’d like to Beta Read  a free copy of book #1 of my ‘Sin in The City’ romance series then contact me here.    Send me  an email via ‘contact Kim’ and let me know. I am not a  touchy writer, ( which you probably know already if you have followed me for some time). I don’t need praise I need some honest feedback even if it’s “Kim this is shit… because.” I have thick skin,  so don’t think I want praise, I want honest feedback to better the reading experience, based on  your reading experience of the draft before publishing. That said if your feedback is ” Kim this is great,” then I’ll dust off my shoulders,  do a happy dance and continue to spin some sinful romance for this series.

Thank you! I’d love some help 🙂
