Random Word Play: ‘Postmark’

Well, in my quest to continue writing about words, and researching the origins of them, today as I opened my dictionary the random word I stopped at was ‘postmark.‘ When I think of this word I think of mail and letters. Letters are very important to me and have been for maybe more than ten years now. That’s because I have international pen pals … yes! Pen pals? Like who does that these days? *Raises hand.*

I have enjoyed the art of handwritten letters sent far and wide around the world, for more than a decade. Some people I have and still do exchange letters with, I have never even met! We have seen a picture of each other, and in some cases I have two pen pals that I have never seen. All we know is each other’s gender, race, age, location in the world and that is all. The rest we have learned about each other via letter exchanges.

I started by just joining a community of people who love stationery and letter writing,  then I was matched with actual pen pals. I used Geek Girls Pen Pals this is a service where you sign up with your email and interests,  by the middle of the following month you are matched with another pen pal who could be anywhere in the world! Really great service. So, back to today’s word ‘postmark’.

How I Have Used This Word?

When I wrote my first mystery novel The Note   I used letters and notes as a way to drive the story forward. The letters also did not show a distinct ‘postmark’ which made it hard for both of my detectives to trace where they have come from. Other than this as a fiction writer the word ‘postmark’ has not been a major factor in my work, but letters, letter sending, or writing them via my character have always been! I seem to have a ‘thing’ with driving my plots forward with notes, diary entries, or actual letters. Be it from decades ago and relevant to the characters in the present day, or vice-versa.

Should Letter Writing Be A Regular Thing? Or is Technology Better?

If you ask me, yes! Letter writing is so therapeutic it can really help you to express what you feel, in that moment, or historically based on the past in a clear way. This could be relevant to diary writing. But in terms of writing a hand written letter to a friend, family member, or a pen pal you have never met I would still say, yes. I think that letter writing helps to keep literacy levels high! Obviously, and it also encourages deeper communication with a person. This is because you are actually thinking about what you are writing in more detail, than when you write a text, email, or social media post. This is my experience with it anyway.  Letter writing can also help you to form some wonderful long-lasting friendships, with people you would not have met otherwise. I also have found over the years that letter writing builds a slower form of friendship, because you are not having a real time conversation, you need to wait for your response. The result of this has been for me some deep and meaningful connections with others.

I also really love the thrill of going to my mailbox and seeing a letter with an international stamp on, knowing it has travelled miles to get to me, and the sender as taken some of their own precious time to sit and communicate with me.

Is it better than technology?… mmm, no I would not say it is. This could be because I have grown up in the era when social media and the Internet was birthed. I have seen how helpful, quick, and useful it is. Especially for things like research, or even just trying to find your way to a location you have never been before, using Google Maps rather than a traditional map. That said, I do feel that traditional letter writing and communication that comes with a traceable postmark and technology to communicate both serve different purposes. I would not say that one is better than the other, as they are (for me) used for different reasons and at different times.

Where Does the Word ‘Postmark’ Come From?

Well, according to  the Online Etymology Dictionary  this word means:

“Mark or stamp of a post office placed on a letter, etc., giving the place and date of sending.”

According to the Oxford English Dictionary:

Noun: “an official mark stamped on letter or parcel, giving the date of posting and cancelling the postage stamp.”

Verb: ” To stamp a letter or parcel with a post mark.”

It became an official word in around 1670, and is taken from the words post and mark.

Post:

[mail system] c. 1500, “riders and horses posted at intervals,” it was used to refer to messages being sent back and forth, using what we now refer to as a mail system. Clearly around 1500 this was all done by horse using people as the messengers. Riders would ‘post’ on their route, meaning to drop off the messages. The word postmark was also probably fashioned on the French word poste, around the 1500’s which literally does translate to ‘post’ in English.

The meaning “system for the conveyance of letters” is from 1660s. From the 1590s this related to the use of a vehicle to send messages back and forth. From the 1670s is was referred to as “a dispatch of letters from or to a place.” From the 1680’s this is when the word related to newspapers.

Mark

“Trace, impression,” from Old English mearc (West Saxon), merc (Mercian). A “boundary, limit; sign, landmark,” it came from Proto-Germanic *markō (source also of Old Norse merki “boundary, sign,” mörk “forest,” which often marked a frontier; Old Frisian merke, Gothic marka “boundary, frontier,” Dutch merk “mark, brand,” German Mark “boundary, boundary land”).

Post Mark:

This word which came together from two other words is one that can be used in so many ways, from writing fiction based on the postmark of a letter or note, it can be used to identify the location of something or someone, and it can be a source of joy to see when a letter arrives in the mail. Much more so than when you see a letter that has a local postmark and you know it is a bill for something that needs to be paid! Whenever I get bunch of mail and mixed in with all the bills to pay is a letter with a postmark for a location hundreds or even thousands of miles, away it does brighten up my day.

What was the postmark of the last letter you received? Where did it come from?

What was the last letter you received was it a bill, or something personal and nice?

Do you write letters, have pen pals? Have you ever considered it?

Do you send traditional post cards, or birthday cards still?

Finding Your Purpose in Life: Where To Start?

I’ve really been slacking with my #90DayBlogChallenge that I set myself, but as I woke up this morning this dawned on me,‘finding one’s purpose in life and where to start?‘ As I progressed through the day the need to shed some light on this, that may help others became stronger. Especially with the pandemic and many people experiencing instability with work, or income. It’s an ideal time to really sit down and ask yourself have you found your purpose? And how would you even go about this?

But what is purpose?

Purpose/ˈpəːpəs

Noun

  1. The reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.”The purpose of the meeting is to appoint a trustee.”
  2. A person’s sense of resolve or determination.”There was a new sense of purpose in her step as she set off.”

Verb

  1. Have as one’s intention or objective.”God has allowed suffering, even purposed it.”

According to the Oxford English Dictionary’s definition above, it’s a reason for something or could even be an action also. So think about this: purpose means reason, so what’s one’s reason for living, breathing, getting up. Secondly, what is one placed here to do, achieve,or be in this life?

How could/do you find your purpose?

I won’t lie I did find my own purpose a good while back, years back actually. That said, it took a while for me to accept it and move towards it. For me it kind of just landed in my lap following a change in direction. I’d say it ( my purpose) found me. This was probably on reflection a much harder way to find one’s purpose, why? Simply because I had to wait for it to find me, I had to have a change in direction, I had to remain in a state of what I like to call ‘no man’s’ land’ and not realise that the direction I was travelling in, while I enjoyed it, it was not really the divine path laid out for me. Finding my purpose could have made me happier and it did, once it landed in my lap. So for anyone who stumbles across this random blog post I’d say– seek it out now your own purpose. You could save some of the best years of your life being wasted.

Ask yourself?

What do I enjoy doing?

What am I good at/ what’s my talent?

What would I like to be good at?

What have I overcome/ survived/ been through/ or have experience in that could help others? Or even make me some money?

The first two questions will show you clearly where or how you could spend your time, and that activity might not feel like a drag. This is a major thing for finding one’s purpose, the purpose should ideally not feel like something that you’d only be in the mood to do less than 75 percent of the time. You really must enjoy the purpose whatever it is for your own sanity, and the likely-hood that you’d continue with it.

If you really hone in on your talent this is also an excellent opportunity to find your purpose. Think of soft skills also that we have as people. If you’re a good listener, good at giving advice, or supporting people these talents can lend themselves to professions/directions you may not have considered.

Sometimes, things we enjoy that could well be our purpose in life we need to up-skill a bit in, take writing for example. Even a writer can have a natural talent ( like myself), but there are things to learn along the way. For sure I didn’t know everything, or as much as I know now to be anywhere as good as I am now, even if I had a natural talent to start with. This does not mean that you’re no good at your purpose or initial talent, it could just need to be honed a bit more. This leads on to what would I like to be good at? See if you have a talent, interest, skills, something you identify that could be your purpose, it’s important to consider if you’d be prepared to do what it takes to be good at it, if you needed to work o it– what would you like to be good at in other words. Something that would not overwhelm you or bore you.

Lastly, in life we all go through the shit, the motions, the drama, and it’s often in these times that we have our greatest growth. Not only that these testing times can cause us to change direction, or gain some kind of experience from hindsight that could really help others. This is key, whatever you’ve overcome, experienced, survived, grown from can be your purpose in life that could be used to help others. Or even give you a new stream of income, and great pleasure. Also, the help, support, advice, service whatever it is that’s your one talent, if it does not feel like something you would only want to do less than 75 percent of the time, then you’re on to a winner also!

How can finding your purpose really benefit you though?

Well if it’s not obvious yet, I read a book called Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life it became so clear to me from the study the author carried out into the Japanese way of life that, those who had found a purpose in life not only lived longer, they were physically healthier and happier. These are clearly the main benefits. From my own experience of finding my purpose while I don’t know if I will live longer, until it happens LOL I do know that, I get up each day with a whole different vibe than I did before. No matter what is going on personally, or even globally as I tend to keep up with world events I feel good, very good generally personally. I am happier, I actually am healthier my habits for sure are! I wake up before or with the sunrise and that first hour is spent only on me alone, doing something I want to start my day well. Whether that be listening to a podcast with positive news, affirmations, listening to an audio or just a moment of appreciation. The latter is the other major thing I’ve found with finding my purpose– I am full of appreciation and gratitude even in times of hardship and sorrow. This kind of attitude in life can really help you get through each day. Especially in these times we’re all living in with the pandemic, and political heat in some parts of the world, that does impact on others watching the politics play out. So friend, if you have not really considered if you’re on the right track or your purpose in life, with all these benefits to your health and well-being, please do read over the points above, reflect, and reach towards your purpose don’t wait for it to find you!

Daily Gratitude Challenge Day #11: The Here and Now #DailyGratitudeChallenge

A few weeks back I discovered this really cool blog challenge by Suzy Speaks. I did one challenge for day 16,  which was based on hobbies and interests. Today I’m dipping in at day #11, what I’m grateful for in the here and now.

To be honest, I just wrote and shared an article about the impact on children and Covid-19, based on science. I shared some key research. Once I finished writing it I said to myself, ‘thank God for…’ and now wish to express that gratitude and take part in this challenge.

Here and Now…

I’m extremely grateful for the fact that I’m a ‘lucky parent.’ I wish to acknowledge this, and express gratitude for it. I am in a position where  I can take control and decide the fate, long term health, and care of my child. I can decide whether to send him back to school during this pandemic or not. Finance and money have no major say in it. I’m thankful that if my son stays home, we will not be financially impacted in a way that means my family will not eat. I work from home,  my hours I can decide what time of day or night I work. Which means I just have to swap around my working life. Yes it’s true I will be very tired by doing this LOL yes it’s true I may not make as much money as during the day I need to home-school and care for him, but we will eat! I wish to extend a prayer to all families who will be impacted on, as they need to leave the house and the kids go to school. Therefore finance and money are the deciding factor, or for whatever reason they are pushed to send them back.

I wish to express gratitude for my career before I became an author, the ten years I spent in the classroom as a teacher. From this I am able to carry out home-schooling confidently. I wish to extend a prayer for those parents who may not feel as confident, and leave you this website with home-schooling resources, every country can access it. https://www.twinkl.co.uk/

Personal Development

I want to express gratitude as during this pandemic, I’ve blogged about it before it has allowed me to make some wonderful progress! Writing two books and completing one novella. I’m about to finish a second novella too. Not only that I’ve been on a personal development journey. I completed a Reiki course, and just enrolled on a Yoga and Pilates teacher course online. Purely as during ‘lock down’ I had to keep myself amused in the house, what could I do? I found some online courses to kill time.

About ten years ago or maybe just over I started a Yoga teacher’s course, but circumstances did not allow me to finish it. This time all these years later I would like to, and aim to complete my course. I also have had a chance to go back to practicing both Yoga and Pilates which has been a blessing, to help kill time at home.

Writing

I’d like to express gratitude for my talent as a writer, just because I want to put that thankfulness out there! I’ve started a journaling challenge for the next twenty one days too, I would like to express gratitude for this opportunity, blog, and article I read about finding me randomly. It seems like a brilliant way to get through these tough times that might ahead with how life has changed with the pandemic.

Interaction, Social Media and the Internet Radio

This is going to sound weird, but I would die without my Internet radio, and the BBC World News Service station. I don’t watch TV at all, I prefer books and the radio, music or YouTube. Plus my son takes it over so I barely watch it. I would like to express gratitude for technology which allows us to all keep up to date with what is happening in every corner of the world, from the comfort of our own homes.

And everyone or anyone who has picked up a book of mine over the pandemic read it, reviewed it, or reached out to me and made contact. Also everyone who follows and reads my random blog posts and rants I’d like to express my gratitude in the here and now for all of you. What are you grateful for? Join in with Suzy Speaks #DailyGratuitudeChallenge and write it down.
