Marguerite Annie Johnson or Maya Angelou was born on the 4th of April 1928 in St. Louis Missouri. She was a poet, memoirist, author, actress, dancer and civil rights activist. Maya’s work includes seven autobiographies, three books of essays, multiple poetry books, movies, plays and TV shows. Her autobiography I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings was the first non-fiction bestseller by an African-American woman. She became the first black female streetcar conductor in California in the 1940s.
Maya Angelou is a renowned and respected spokesperson for black people and women as her books address issues like racism, identity, travel and more. She passed away on the 28th of May 2014 and continues to be an inspiration for many people from all walks of life.
