Diversity Within Fiction, Are We There Yet? #amwriting #MFRW #diversity

When I first started to write it did cross my mind that being a British author, not everyone may connect.  It never bothered me and it still doesn’t  now.  I feel this way as there is a reader out there for every writer, no matter what you write be it dark stuff or light comedy. I’ve come to feel really strongly that writers should not, and can not write to people please. Why? You’ll lose yourself , who you are and what you want to write. I write it how I like it end of.

Over the last twenty four hours I’ve really been thinking about diversity within fiction, this is mainly due to the writing prompt I did on the Ideal  Romance Hero, and  the  guest author post I done with Author Jane Ridson. I was asked ( in the guest post)  how I go about using diverse characters, and what advice I would give to those that shy away from it. To me, diversity is a given, where I’m from in London it’s a melting pot of different cultures  we love diversity this side of the water pretty much, well in London anyway. So it comes natural that I write reflecting what’s around me, and my diverse friends I have. It would be really hard not to.

Last night, I reflected on this point about diversity a little further, when I woke up this morning and read a few  other writer’s POV on the Ideal Romance Hero it occurred to me that my take on Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome  and the ideal romance hero is quite different, which is fine. I don’t mind standing out! One  ( supportive) comment led me to feel that diversity really does need to be embraced, I also had a response to my Beta Reader call from someone who is keen  to be a Beta Reader for me as I’m a different race and gender to them and I’m on  the other side of the world. This is cool really cool. 🙂  But … are we there yet? Do we still have a little work to do with diversity in fiction? There’s a blogger I love his name is Jason Cushman or Opinionated Man to you and I. I’ve said it before he is rather funny, frank, and to the point. He is also rather raw in his take on diversity.  Jason is of Asian descent and embraces it from what I read,  but he does highlight ” the struggle” he’s over in the USA.I thought about Jason, some of his posts I’ve read and his struggles. You should check him out.

I then went to Facebook in search of marketing groups or companies who actually work with writers who feature diverse characters.  I’d like to put my Romance Set in Paradise series in front of some readers who may love and seek a bit of diversity. Also my future work also, as you know I’ll never quit creating diverse characters. Do you know I found none, not one, like not even a choice! I am really surprised. This led me to set up my own group called Black, Asian and Minority Readers and Writers   this is not about segregation it’s more about celebration! Of authors who feature diverse character line ups, and can maybe help support other authors branch into this ( if they want to) without the fear of stereotypes, or stereotyping those they feature,  find readers who want to find  diversity in their fiction, a chance for all writers  regardless of their own race who love, support and read diverse fiction to come together. This includes the gay community also. I have nothing against same sex relationships at all, live and let live is my motto.  I feel like I want to do something from this side of the Atlantic as there are so many in the USA ( FB groups) with this focus on African American writers /fiction, but I see little with a welcome for all minority groups for anyone who would say they are a minority or of some mixed background.  Or am I just not looking hard enough?

So, if you’re an author of an ethnic background, or an author who writes with diversity regardless of your background, or you’d like to try it! Join the group, the link is above. I hope to build a community of support. And readers, marketers and lovers of our diverse work. Because variety is the spice of life.

Tell me, what’s your views on diversity in general?

Book Excerpt: Manners Cost Nothing! Release date 9.6.17 #amwriting #romance

None

Today’s WordPress writing prompt is the word none. Don’t you just hate people with no manners? Rude, dismissive, up their own backside kinda people. When it comes to manners they have none. *Pouts* yeah me too, I’m not a fan.

Let’s take a look at how it makes Yasmin feel, the main female character in book #2  Lover’s Retreat of my Romance Set in Paradise series. Remember that luke warm first encounter  she has with my hero Michael …. which by the end of the story turns red hot. Here ‘s their first encounter, it gets worse. Poor Yasmin! She’s only just arrived in Sri Lanka. Micheal as no manners, none what so ever. But I promise you by the end he will be your hero. I hope I’ve added another potential book boyfriend to my characters…

John’s muffled but cheerful voice vibrates around the minibus over the radio.

“Okay everyone this is it! We’re on our way to Hirkiketiya Bay beach where our retreat is located. We have a nice meal and some drinks lined up to break the ice. In the morning you’ll be greeted with the beautiful beach we’re based on for the next five days, just south of the main town. It’s clean, quiet and has some friendly waves for all you surfers. In the meantime sit back and enjoy the ride.”

A round of claps echo around the minibus as Yasmin’s fellow retreat goers express their excitement about Hirkiketiya Bay. Lowering her gaze to her lap she internally gives herself a high five. She’s done it, she broke loose to take the first steps toward moving forward with her life. Now all she has to do is try to integrate with her new found community of soul seekers, at the retreat over the next five days. She takes a deep breath as she turns her attention to the man sitting next to her. She takes in his scruffy looking appearance once more, as she decides if he’s approachable. He is in desperate need of a haircut. His jet black curly hair has out grown its tapered cut. He sports a tiny afro. His beard boarders his square jawline which could also do with a shave. His features are sharp. Behind his scruffiness his smooth full lips and almond shape eyes peek out. From his dress sense Yasmin guesses he’s around her age. He wears dark denim jeans and a black T-shirt with the iconic Nike swoosh icon on the front. Around his left wrist is a beaded brown ethic style bracelet.

“Hi, my name’s Yasmin.”

Yasmin offers her hand to the stranger. He looks up from his paperback and slowly looks her up and down. His expression appears to be one of surprise that she introduced herself.

“Hi.” Is all he says. He doesn’t accept Yasmin’s handshake and lowers his eyes back to his paperback. Yasmin’s breath catches in her throat as she sighs, he shrugged her off in a rather unfriendly way. She tries again to make friends.

“What’s your name?”

He turns back to her and licks his lips, this time he fixes Yasmin with a more friendly stare.

“Michael.”

“Nice to meet you Michael.”

He nods again and reverts his eyes to his paperback. He does a double side glance as he notices Yasmin still watching him and  then shakes his head.

“What are you reading? Anything interesting?”

“Stephen King… If you must know.”

“Oh wow, I love his books which––”

Michael cuts her off before she can finish her sentence.

“Jasmin, I don’t mean to be––”

Yasmin cuts in and meets his gaze.

“It’s Yasmin.”

There’s a moment’s silence between them as they lock eyes with annoyed expressions on their faces. Yasmin is surprised at his harsh tone of voice and how dismissive he is. Michael is impatient with Yasmin’s attempts to make small talk that he’d rather not have.

“Sorry, Yasmin. I don’t mean to be rude but I’d rather be left alone, if that’s okay with you.”

Michael’s response comes out more as a statement rather matter of fact, than a question or polite request. Yasmin pouts, nods her head and then lowers her lashes. She clears her throat.

“No problem.”

Is all she can say with slight embarrassment. She pulls out her phone and then places her earphones in each of her ears. She selects a complication of classical music by Beethoven and Mozart. As the minibus whizzes along the bumpy roads of Dickwella, Yasmin tries her best not to take offence from Michael’s rudeness. She stares out the window at the fast- moving scenery with a scowl on her face. The navy blue sky is alight with bright stars, the tall palm trees stand still in the humid night air. As John guides the minibus through the rural areas of Dickwella in the still of the night, Yasmin hopes her fellow retreat goers are more friendly than Michael. His unapproachable persona sends her into a state of panic. Has she made the right choice booking this retreat? Will she be welcomed? Plays on her mind.

Oh dear, how do these two actually figure out their differences?? More excerpts to follow!

Romance Writer’s Blogging Challenge Week #16: My Biggest Dream? #MFRW

Hmmm ask an author this question and they’ll all say the same thing… New York Times Bestseller, Bestselling Author. These are all the recognition awards and titles we’re after right? Wrong, okay maybe, but not always in this order. 🙂

For me personally living the dream would mean  a  HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE catalogue of novels and novellas in both the romantic suspense and thriller genres. When I think of this dream, the one author that comes to mind is Stephen King. On my last check he has over fifty published novels. And my all time inspiration Jackie Collins the author I salute, as it was her who introduced me to romantic suspense when I was hardly in my mid twenties. I stumbled across  her novel Deadly Embrace , I then read everything by Jackie I could get my hands, on before I became an author. Surprise surprise I sleep and breathe this genre! Creating my own spin on romance and suspense. Jackie had upon her death something like thirty two novels  published I think off memory.  I was so upset when she died, I feel like some part of life is now missing. I’m one of her fans who would wait impatiently for the next hit, I’d check her site regularly to see what’s coming next and curse when I could not see my next hit coming. My other inspiration the great British crime author, Martina Cole has about twenty odd crime novels from memory. A lot of them I have also read.  When Martina publishes a book, a wicked grin comes over my face! I’m excited.  This is the level I’m talking about in terms of books I’d love to write and the kind of buzz I’d love to create in my genre one day as an author. Considering I’m only thirty four if I get a wiggle on and stay focused,  just maybe it could happen! I could knock out plenty of work.

I’m not focused so much on all the awards or labels authors can get, as nice as they are, it’s more about productivity. I’m also not that focused on becoming rich, this is the last thing I’m writing for.  I had an author mention this who will feature in my Meet The Author – I won’t say who it is look out for them on the 25th.  I’d personally like to give up the part time day job, write more full time, pay the bills by doing what I love and feel my talent really is and not worry. That’s the dream. I’d also love an endless supply of M.A.C and Kat Von D make-up, to create a line of clothing, a house with a pool and large garden for my little boy and to live in the sun…. pretty please if God’s listening LOL.

What’s your dream?? What are you doing to make it happen? If you’re an author reading this is it all about the label, money or the volume of work you put out?

Meet The Author: Didi Oviatt- Suspense & Thriller Author #author #amreading

17884022_1473151619384065_144535076964953328_n (1)

It’s the 25th so it’s time for meet the author… do you know Didi Oviatt?  I’m excited to feature another author within my own genre. Didi is a suspense and thriller author from the USA.  Her talent is spinning those twists and turns that keep us turning pages. I was really interested  in  getting to know Didi as her environment is so different from mine, I’m a big city girl from London she’s ” a dirt road country girl” from the USA to use her words. This made me think her inspiration for stories could be quite different to mine. What does she cook up within our suspenseful genre?? My mind boggled. I was keen to learn  so I interviewed her. Let’s get to know her style….

Hello nice to meet you! Tell us a bit about you where are you from and other than writing what else do you enjoy?

Hi Kim, thanks for having me!! I’m a small town, dirt road country girl from the U.S.  Aside from an attempt to make literacy and a great attention span cool again amongst a community of somewhat wrongfully accused rednecks, I like to spend my time outdoors! (doing redneck things like hiking and fishing and riding four wheelers lol)

How did you start writing? What was your inspiration to create?

My husband and I went through a difficult patch in life while we were trying to have children. Writing became my process, my way to escape reality in a sense. It helped me to clear my head and focus on something other than medical issues. I wrote a blog post about it a while back, here is a link:

https://didioviatt.wordpress.com/2017/01/17/transformingpersonaltraumaanddevastationintodriveandasheerwilltosucceed/

Also, I’d always toyed with the idea of writing a book, but it wasn’t until a close friend of mine encouraged me as she was writing one of her own.  I went into the whole writing adventure with the attitude of, “If she can do it I can.”  But then, soon enough, curiosity turned to habit, and habit turned to obsession…  Now, here we are!

Kim: Wow Didi, it is always good when a life changing experience pushes you in a new direction.

Who is your favourite author, is there anyone out there that inspires you?

My favorite Author overall is hands down, bar none Colleen Hoover!!! She is a POWERHOUSE writer!  I absolutely love her work. She’s also a pillar of the community, a giver!  I’m proud to be a Cohort (for those fellow Cohort-ers like myself who are actually reading this, you are f**king awesome!) If you are not familiar with Colleen’s work then check out her amazing website, and don’t skip out on the information about The Bookworm Box!!  This woman truly is phenomenal! http://www.colleenhoover.com/

What genre do you enjoy reading?

I actually prefer to read romance, which is funny because when it comes to writing I crave suspenseful plot points and quick paced scenes. It helps me to stay excited and keep my head in the game.

Kim: me too!

How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?

I’ll never forget the first time I picked up my first novel after publication. The only thing I could do is pick it apart!  Since then, I spend triple the amount of time in the editing and revision phases, and I never ever ever go back and read my own work after it’s actually published. As writers we are, always have been, and always will be our own greatest critics! I’ve learned that it’s best to make sure it’s absolutely perfected before sending it off to be published, and then never look back.

Kim: I can relate to that, I never go back now, when I’m done I’m done. Unless someone points out a typo. Then I’m like ” whhhhhhhhat? Who? Where is that bitch what page? I’m going back in”  🙂

So you’ve published a series, what is the series about?

I do have one series in the works. So far I’ve only released the first of three novellas, it’s titled New Age Lamians. It’s a post-apocalypse trilogy with a mythological twist. I plan to release the next two books in this series next year 2018…  In the meantime I’ve been working on another stand alone mystery/thriller that will go out in the fall of this year 2017.

What was it like creating back to back stories that link?

It’s actually been quite a bit harder than I thought, hence the break lol.  I have the second and third outlined and all of my surprises and plot points in place, but I really struggled keeping my head in the game. I decided that by taking a break from it, I might be able to do the story more justice by going back in with a clean slate and a fresh perspective. It’s easy to let yourself get blinded by over attachment.

Kim: I think you’re right. My first ever idea  I wanted to write in full for a novel I have on ice, and it’s been there since 2015. I’m going to go back into writing it  the end of this year, and put it out next year I think.

Have you ever thought about writing in a different genre? If you could what genre would you like to dabble in?

Absolutely! Variety IS the spice of life after all. I feel like challenging yourself is necessary to grow as an author. Otherwise it’s easy to slip into repetition. Suspense is most definitely where my talent shines the brightest, (whether it be YA dystopian or mystery/thrillers) but eventually, when I feel I’m seasoned enough, then I’d love to try my hand at a romantic comedy.

Kim: Excellent! Romance with a smile sounds good. I really respect the erotica genre, I keep telling myself I need to be brave enough to try to write one… one day.

What has been your most proud moment as an author?

It’s hard to pin down just one. But I would have to say the last few months as a whole has absolutely taken the cake. Before the release of my last book Aggravated Momentum (which came out in Sept. 2016) I lacked enough confidence as an author to really put myself out there. In a way I feel like writing an adult psychological thriller kind of forced me out of my shell and comfort zone. Since I made the decision to really own my work and myself as a writer, I’ve actually started turning heads. Strangers in my community have recognized me in stores and read my work (talk about exciting!) I’ve also been growing my author’s blog and social media platform which is such an amazing feeling of accomplishment!

Kim: Love it, and well done.

Was there ever a time you wanted to pick up your laptop, and then launch it out the window with frustration?

YES!!!  haha at least once a every couple of weeks!  I guess that’s what makes it all worth it in the long run though. The fact that it IS a LONG RUN… If writing was easy then everyone would do it. Also, I guess being a girl with an epic temper doesn’t help.

Are you a “plotter” or a fly by the seat of your pants “pantster” as a writer?

I linger, lost somewhere in between the two. I try to be a planner, but usually come up with something better along the way, so I change my mind constantly.  I’ve never been able to stick to any kind of a plan, like at all.. This applies to every aspect of my life. Writing, date nights, road trips, meals lol… I always start out with every little detail in line, and by the time I dive in all bets are off the table and everything transforms into utter chaos.

Kim: LOL

Am I the only one who gets hung up on commas? Do they make you go blah! when you’re writing?

Kim, you’re not alone!  haha I loath commas! They’re like the evil stepchild of all punctuation.

Kim: Blah!

Every writer has a word(s) that they always slip up on when they write, then slap their forehead when they notice their typo. For me it’s further and farther exit or exists-  but hey I’m over it now.  Do you have a word (s) that make you go blah! Go away not another damn typo.

For me it’s a toss up between definitely vs. defiantly, and then vs. than… So irritating!  It’s like we know what they mean and that we often type them wrong by accident, but we still fail to pay attention when they come up.

What three tips would you give any aspiring writer?

  • If you think your novel has been edited and revised enough, you’re wrong. Do it again.
  • Understand that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Take your time and do it right. Even after it’s all said and done, never stop marketing and putting your name out there.
  • All the time. If you want to master your skills, then you need to be an expert. The only way to be the best writer is by reading constantly.

Kim: I agree with all of that. Wonderful tips, thank you Didi.

What are you working on now? What will you release next?

I’m so dang excited about my latest and greatest! Search For Maylee is a mystery novel that I intend to release in the fall of this year, so hold your breath!!! Here is a short description:

Since Maylee was abducted from her high school the very month of graduation, her Aunt Autumn has never lost hope in finding her.  It’s been three years. Autumn has finally reached inside herself and found the courage to track down an old lead. She moves across the country to find him. Will Autumn be able to pry Maylee’s case back open? More importantly, what will Autumn uncover in the process of searching for Maylee?  It’s a cold dark world we live in, and she is about to find out just how cruel it can be. Strength and determination are on Autumn’s side and she will do whatever it takes to either bring Maylee home, or to deliver the justice she deserves.

Kim: it’s on the read list..*wink

So…. where can we get your books?

You can find every one of my books on my Amazon Author’s Page here: amazon.com/author/didioviatt

Does a big ego help or hurt writers?

My opinion on this matter is very simple. Humble confidence outshines a boisterous ego anyday! A big ego never helped anyone, with anything, ever…  But a quiet healthy confidence on the other hand, is everything.

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

Hardly any… To be completely honest, I hate research and I suck at it.  What little bit that’s required, I kind of leave hanging for my editor to “come across” and have to fix lol… Don’t worry though, she’s a friend so it’s fine 😉

Kim: wow! I actually do it all before I give  the MS to my editor. I really enjoy this part.

Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?

I read every single one, sometimes multiple times. I have very thick skin, and I understand that not everyone has the same taste in books just like they don’t have the same taste in food or movies. To each their own, I rarely get my feelings hurt from reviews… But, I do LEARN from them! You can’t fix your writing if you don’t know what’s wrong with it. Constructive criticism is imperative for writers and it’s a really big deal to take it with a grain of salt. Some reviews help you learn, and some reviews are fantastic and are a HUGE confidence booster! Who doesn’t love to read about how wonderfully talented they are?

What was your hardest scene to write?

Aggravated Momentum has the very first sex scene I’ve ever written. I’m not a shy person by any means, but I wrote it through the eyes of my killer, so it had to be twisted in a more than dirty way. He reflected back on his victims while making his partner do nasty things. It was a very difficult scene, it took me weeks. I felt like it was imperative to the story line, but then again I didn’t want to overdo it, or underdo it either. I may have obsessed over it way more than necessary, but I guess that happens to even the best lol.

Kim:  Good job. I think it is excellent when writers step into the shoes of their characters, no matter how horrible they are. I did the same thing in A Stranger in France, it took me by surprise too how much of a challenge it can be. But when it is done well, it does wonders for a reader’s experience. Think of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, one of ( in my opinion) the best thrillers I’ve read, she does it so so well.

Do you Google yourself?

OFTEN! lol

Kim: 🙂
