Adopted by the Streets is to give the reader a little insight on how growing up in a hood environment you are introduced to a lot of things at an early age and how you are born with a curse over your life passed down from generation to generation. Until one person tries to fight his whole life to break his generational curse. Sacrificing his life for a better future for the generations to come.

What do you get when you mix Spartacus with Spaceballs? We’re not sure either, but somewhere in there is Lawrence Hall. A man of few words until he begins speaking, you can often find him with a smile on his face, until he takes a picture. Then he tries to put on his best 1990s hardcore hip hop persona, which would be a mix of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. Unless MC Hammer is on the radio. Hailing from the capital city of the USA, he has over 10 years of teaching experience. This means Lawrence has mastered the art of daydreaming and not listening, but pretending he hears and sees everything. He’s the perfect chameleon. An avid film buff, and lover of HEA, he’s too much of an optimist to want anything else. His motto: I may fall like Autumn but I’ll rise a new season. Making his debut in May 2019 as a bona fide romance author, you can find him all over your favorite social media. Lawrence loves to engage and invites you to come stalk…I mean…follow him!

Meet another poet today, from our male authors of colour line up. Cedric is a Leo and in his own words, ‘a triple threat I sing/rap write and act’. His favourite color is red. And his hobbies include sports, performing and karaoke.  He has a  beautiful daughter named Miracle.

Fun fact: I was the Warner robins division of the boys and girls club youth of the year in 2002.

Cedric appears to be a man with many words, and talents from his Facebook interaction. He published his first book in 2017 which he’d like to share today.

Do you ever wish you could go back in time, knowing what you know now? I know I do. In this book, I give my daughter real life experiences to show her how to become the best miracle she can be. I show her about-worth, love, life, and goals. I also set goals for myself on future memories I want to make with her. This overall time capsule of a father’s love is sure to touch the heart of readers for years to come.

Let’s get  to know a very interesting male author of colour from the world of poetry today.

Robert L. Horton, was born and raised in Springfield, IL.  His journey to manhood started when he became a father at 17. Knowing that he needed to take responsibility, he enlisted in the Army the following year. Being emotionally ill-equipped to handle the rigors of military life, Robert was honorably discharged from the Army in October of 1991 after 13 months of service. He returned home, married his high school sweet-heart and grew his family.

During his time in the Army, Robert learned how to drive combination vehicles. Utilizing those skills he acquired in the military, enhanced by training at a national truck driving school, Robert obtained a Commercial Driver’s License and became an over-the-road trucker to provide for his growing family. Being weary of being away from his family as an truck driver, and after reading Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu’s acclaimed book, Countering The Conspiracy to Destroy Black Boys, he enrolled at Lincoln Land Community College earning an Associate’s Degree in Elementary Education.  Following graduation, he worked as a Teacher’s Aide in District 186 and founded, The House of Men for Education (a non-profit organization whose mission was to attack the “fourth grade failure syndrome”).  Robert was 30 years old.

With an unquenched thirst for knowledge, and following a seven year respite from college, he enrolled at the University of Illinois (UIS), earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work. Robert worked as a Case-Manager and became a Foster Care Provider. Finding his calling in serving his community, Robert continues to self-actualize through his devotion to family, service to others, pursuit of even higher education, and soulful poetry.  Robert returned to UIS to pursue a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. Further, Robert released his first book of poetry, Released, Inspired Poetic Messages.

Robert is currently working on a Children’s Book, The Search (For The Prodigious Son) and his second book of poetry, Black Rage and Responsible Revolution (The Poetic Plea!)

How cool to have Nolan back, I interviewed him earlier this year. You can read his full interview here.   Nolan  was born and raised in Queens, NY.  He relocated to Atlanta in 1995.  He enjoys watching sports, playing pool and going to the gym.   He also enjoys service on Sundays and co-hosting the radio show Level Up.

Nolan has been writing poetry for a number of years from discussions I’ve had with him, he also has a tattoo dedicated to his name, “Mr. Scribe” how cool!

“This book is a surprise to me. About two and half years ago I wrote a poem to a friend. Got a positive response so I continued writing. Over that time my life has come full circle. Getting back to building a relationship with God, renewing the bond with my children has started a fire to pen “scribes.” I have discovered a way of expressing myself that people can relate and feel. This motivation has me putting my collection in book form,” says Nolan Holloway.
