Tick Tock… Countdown Begins

7 days

Good morning and happy Sunday,

I’m back to a cloudy and overcast London. I’ve had a week away in the south west of the UK at the coast, on my first ever UK/ seaside coastal holiday (longer than  a 1 day visit). We had a great time at the beach (freezing water) the zoo ( my son freak out with excitement when he saw a real lion). Now back to reality…. editing the final version of A Stranger in France ready for next month’s release date.

I’ve set myself a personal challenge so I can submit my book to the publisher and crack on finishing up the plots and writing of my 3rd book. I’m exactly 50% through the editing process of A Stranger in France, I have 14 more chapters to  go. My challenge is to complete  the last 14 chapters  in the next 7 days- by editing 2 chapters per day. This will be done around working and life!

This is quite a big challenge, as editing does take time you’re not just reading over things you’re really reading over things almost with a different hat on. I’m finding that as well as making the minor changes my editor has recommended, I also rethinking parts that I’ve wrote. I’ve come down in word count from 93,000 originally to now 89,000 and I’m half way through.

So I hope to deliver a trimmed, exciting, romantic, suspenseful and sexy story  for you all in September.

About to sign publishing contract #2!

Success

Oh! What a way to end the day, well it’s 1:00 a.m London time but still you know what I mean. I’m not tired, I’ve been up doing word prompt writing challenges and reading blog posts- catching up on what I’ve missed these last few days. I should really be in bed, as my little boy will be up bright an early expecting to go to nursery school but it’s the summer holiday  bless him.

It’s been a busy end to last week and start to this week. Last week, I received the edited version back of novel #1 “A Stranger in France”  I’m pleased to say no edits to my actual story, my editor left it untouched at this stage. Just edits to allow the book to be better read. I’m happy. Today, I also received (an hour ago) an email from my publisher with a contract for the short novella story I wrote. It’s due for release Christmas 2016, as my publisher will be releasing a number of Christmas themed books then I guess to pump up sales around the festive season. I am beside myself with nerves, happy thoughts and positive vibes. Since it’s after 1:00 a.m in the morning, I can’t call anyone and scream down the phone yet- hence the blog post. 🙂

So, I will look over the contract, sign and return along with the request for a brief on my book cover. I actually don’t have any idea how I visually want the cover to look. (Yet)…. do I bling -it- up and go all festive, or keep it sexy and romantic it is after all a contemporary feelgood romance, with slight suspense based around the festive season… decisions decisions.

The book is complete, and submitted already.  I’m just waiting for the edited version. In the meantime I’m still working on edits for ” A Stranger in France” I’ve got a lot on writing wise but loving it.

Stay tuned to the blog I will do a cover reveal again and chapter preview again for novel #2.

Reflection #4: Ideas and Nerves!

WP_20160709_001

Today’s reflection was originally wrote on  the back of an envelope of a card I received this week, while sat  on the top deck of the #12 bus from Trafalgar Square (central London) heading home. You can see the original on the right hand side above, my scribbles are hardly readable even to myself, as the bus ride was not the smoothest! Anyway, I thought I’d blog the reflection this evening. To the left the other blue envelope is a response to a writing prompt (from the book I picked up today which you can also see in the picture).  I got creative and responded to a prompt on my journey home on the bus.

Dear ”Diary”,

I feel a real mixture of emotions today don’t get me wrong it has been a good day, I went to book club to meet up with my fellow book worm buddy’s to discus the books read over the last month ( sadly  I never got to finish reading this month’s books due to working on my own manuscript I finally submitted 33 days early!). Anyway, I had those giddy feelings as I walked into Waterstones again ( the UK’s largest/major book store chain) knowing that in just 2 months I’d have my very own book in a store/ published. It was a quiet afternoon at Waterstones in central London today, not much of a crowd in -store. Maybe as the weather in London today  was nice this morning.

While looking around Paperchase for a birthday card  mum, I treated myself to a book ” 642 thinks to write about” a thick book with writing prompts in. I’m super excited! I think I need to slow down with how many of these books I buy, I already have one with 365 prompts.

Today, I also received some very positive feedback from a good friend of mine who read my sample chapters, the one thing I’m paranoid about in my writing ( typos) she spotted! But that happens when you’re up writing at 3am; according to her apparently it did not spoil my story or take way anything from it. She said ( about the chapters she read) ” it’s a good introduction”, ” I was gripped right from the beginning ” and ” I would like to read more” now if you know my friend I’ll call her Ms X she’s a hardcore critic when it comes to writing! Probably as she’s a writer herself and is writing her own book which I can’t wait to read. To hear this feedback from Ms X really helped to boost my confidence and reduce a little bit of my nerves around my first novel she ” liked Kate and could identify with her” ( my heroine) and she ” hated Danny” ( one of the heros) which is exactly how I want readers to feel while reading, I intended for my characters to come across like this.

I gave myself a pat on the back after hearing this, I did kick myself for the minor typos and said ” Oh no I’ll go back and edit some more” the girls at book club looked at me like I’d grown a 2nd head or something all shouted ” NO” ” leave it so readers can see the progress” ” it’s with your editor now spotting typos is their job”. As tempting as it is to go back I won’t I’ll focus on the next idea I’m creating instead.

*Kim looks out the window* London can be so pretty I’m just going over Westminster Bridge( a land mark I used in my book) it’s packed with tourists with selfie sticks trying to take a snap with Big Ben in the background, tour groups walking along . ( Here I ran out of envelope to write on :D)

In a nutshell, today on reflection from hearing some positive feedback I’m a LITTLE less nervous about unleashing my work to the world to read, I have to get used to it it’s too late now it’s with the publisher no going back or changing anything major at this point. I am also feeling extremely creative there are some excite writing prompts in my book, I can’t wait to get stuck in and practice improving my skills.

My Interview with Knockin’ Books!

A few months back, I did a guest blog/ interview with Knockin’ Books over in the USA. It was fun to share my experience on how I went about snapping up a publishing deal, from a traditional publisher to help contribute to this month’s news letter on traditional publishing. They’ve published the interview on their website and Facebook page, it can be viewed here.

Reflection #3: Path to Success

Success

What a day, some people work a life time for their dreams to come true and ”die trying’(as 50 Cent the rapper would have us believe). I’ve always believed in the power of the universe, and where there’s a will there’s most certainly a way be positive and work hard. Today I received news that I will have a second book published this year, just 3 months after my 1st!  The book synopsis and sample chapters I  sent over to my publisher have been accepted! My reaction was the same as the first time I opened an email with this news and a contact laid out in front of me, I lost my dam mind! Then  screamed down the phone to my mama. The feeling was no different the second time around, I’ m just as nervous  also.

Novel #1 has been submitted to the publisher so I’m writing #2 right now, it’s within the romance genre again,  with a Christmas release date. A short novella story. And YES I will get around to finishing my first ever book I started to write a gritty crime fiction story set in London and Amsterdam, the pause was due to life, answering a publisher’s call with my romance /suspense idea, and the fact that I  need to research police procedures in the UK before I felt comfortable moving on with the plot. Good news is 2 of my closest girlfriends can help, they are both qualified solicitors in criminal law, (lawyer if you’re an American reader) so I hope to pick their brains, and finish up that baby.

As I reflect, I think about what I’ve learned when it comes to fiction writing sold for commercial reasons rather than to keep to yourself, the first 3 chapters have GOT to make a reader care about the characters or forget it, who would want to read further if they don’t? Or even offer you a publishing deal. Where possible research, research, research ! And become the characters, really portray what they think and feel so they are almost 3D. If a scene does not add to the progress of the story-remove it

So I’m about to go into a few months of labour again- that’s the best way I describe writing  a novel at times 🙂  slow and steady  painful in places … but I’m ganna get busy and crack this  idea kicking around in my head, and get down on paper in full and give birth to it for the whole world to read. Well romance fiction  lovers at least.

Just a short reflection from me on what I’m learning and to share the news about what’s coming up!

”Dream big, work hard, it might just happen”

Reflection #2: Book#2 Proposal Submitted!

idea

I’ve had a few days off from the day job and I’ve been full of creative beans since I submitted my completed manuscript, for my #1 novel due out in September. After some late night grindin’ I got to work on novel #2 well novella #2 I should say. If you read my last blog post following my manuscript submission, you’ll know that I have a handful of ideas across both crime and romance/suspense genres.

I went with the romance genre as I’ve been feeling in a feel good mood, I’m almost 10,00 words in  with this story. Today (just now) I submitted a query letter, sample chapters and book synopsis for my work to my publisher. I  have to remind myself about the time delay! The state in the USA my publisher is based in are like 7 hours behind London time, and it’s a holiday being the 4th of July so I impatiently await a response ( probably in a few weeks or so to be realistic) with fingers and toes crossed that my proposal is accepted.

From discussions with my publisher regarding a second project  potential Christmas/December release date is on the cards! Just 3 months after the release of my 1st novel. I’m excited, nervous and full of creative beans.

My creativity has largely been pushed by passion my for writing and the genres I write in obviously, but also completing in the word prompt responses by WordPress and also the wonderful blogger I discovered MiracleGirl all the way over in India. If you’ve not discovered her blog you really need to take a look, if you enjoy writing challenges and lots of interesting pictures to use as writing prompts. She has a lovely blog going on there and I really wish her well with it as it has inspired me to write. I also have a book with 365 writing prompts one for each day of the year that I will be making use of in between writing novella #2.

So what have I learned on this journey thus far? I know I have a LONG way to go and things are just starting, but I’ve learned:

  • Writing has taken over my life in between everything else, whenever I get a chance I’m behind my lap top!
  • The WordPress community is a great one.
  • My most creative time is late at night.
  • Editing can be a b*tch! Slow and painful the first time you self edit, as it’s hard to chop your work up and the paranoid state over typos and tense slow me down.
  • It’s nothing to do with fame and fortune (all though every published author would not turn their nose up at this) it’s about the love of word and getting the stories out my head and on paper.
  • Sometimes in life, one door closes in one area of your life and it can be the making of you, seriously. Pushing and fuelling you to keep going  in other areas and open up other doors, you never had as a goal or even thought would be possible.
  • Never NEVER give up! Dream big, work hard, keep grindin’ it pays.

Have a great day!

Day #33: Manuscript Submitted!

Success

33 days before my official deadline to submit to my publisher and I’ve just sent over my completed manuscript for my 1st novel! Wow what a feeling, I done it. It was an enjoyable experience from start to finish, from writing my query letter and book synopsis to send to the publisher to editing the final paragraph on page 380 last night!

I’ve learned a lot, mainly that I’m better at writing and creating than actual editing, when it comes to editing I am sloooooooooow and forever paranoid of typos and if it all makes sense. Over the last 4 months the whole process for me has been like child birth painful in some places and at times tiring; but the end result is the best feeling in the world.

So what’s next? What does one do once they have gone through 4 months of child birth and unleashed their creation for others to hopefully enjoy…. Think about book #2 that’s what, already I’m creating another story. I’m in 2 minds I have a half complete crime fiction and a handful of ideas falling within the romance /suspense category. What’s a girl to do?? I’m leaning towards the idea of a nice feel good romance to follow up my up and coming romance/suspense…. I’m in a ”feel good mood” …. but who knows this may change to a ”dark, page turning world of crime ” mood.

What a day! One to celebrate and never forget. September 2016 my first novel will be available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and in print in the USA. You can also download a free chapter by clicking on the chapter preview page at the top.

Day #47: It’s Time To Submit My Book!

Whaaah! I’ve  been day dreaming, fantasising and yearning for this day to come. I’m ready (I think) to submit my baby, I’ve been nurturing for the last 4 months to my publisher. 347 pages ,90,000 odd words and 26 chapters of it to be exact. This afternoon I printed off a copy to do my final read through, before I actually submit but I’d say I’m  99 % ready.

So what have I learned from self editing ? Editing is a dam hard slog, slow and steady wins the race;I’ve literally come home from work done my mama duties, then  sat behind my lap top every evening into the wee hours of the morning, for the last 2 weeks. No change in my routine at all. I also learned that I found editing more of a challenge than writing. You need to put yourself in the shoes of a reader, just because it makes sense to you in your head, and you understand what’s happening would someone else? Is it engaging, interesting and page turning? Is there enough drama and suspense? These were all questions that went through my mind when editing scenes and rewriting.

My word count on my first draft was 93,000 I’m surprised that I only removed 3,000 and wiped out one full scene, other than that it’s pretty in line with what I originally wrote, and my book synopsis I sent over to my publisher  in terms of content and order of events.

It’s a complex job, my first edit was just focused on things like ensuring tense, and view point are correct, facts, dates, and the little things made sense and the story flows. This is important to me as the story is set in 3 locations London, the English coast and France.  My story is also  told first person from the main female character’s voice and 3rd for the male so editing from these different POVs, changing  location and even time zone is quite a challenge.  I’ve learned also, if you read something enough times, you start to read what you want a sentence to say and you may miss things, best to rest your work and come back especially if you’re tired. That said I will read a hard copy of my work before I finally let go of that baby and get ready to unleash it to the world. I am paranoid over typos, it’s a joke.

So with 47 day’s to go until my actual agreed deadline to submit my work to my publisher, I’m well on track to take another week or 2 to do a final hard copy read though to ease my paranoid state,  then hit the send button.

The release month will be September 2016, I plan to do a cover reveal on the blog so stay tuned for that, I’ve handed  a brief over to the publishers  on what I’d like my cover to look like. A blog post is up  on alluring book covers seeking your view yes YOU. You can read all about that here. and interact with me.  As a treat you can download a copy of the first 2 chapters of my book here for free! you lucky, lucky thing you.

Do give me a shout via the contact me page or post up a comment if you do download and enjoy.

Catch you soon.
