Let’s get  to know a very interesting male author of colour from the world of poetry today.

Robert L. Horton, was born and raised in Springfield, IL.  His journey to manhood started when he became a father at 17. Knowing that he needed to take responsibility, he enlisted in the Army the following year. Being emotionally ill-equipped to handle the rigors of military life, Robert was honorably discharged from the Army in October of 1991 after 13 months of service. He returned home, married his high school sweet-heart and grew his family.

During his time in the Army, Robert learned how to drive combination vehicles. Utilizing those skills he acquired in the military, enhanced by training at a national truck driving school, Robert obtained a Commercial Driver’s License and became an over-the-road trucker to provide for his growing family. Being weary of being away from his family as an truck driver, and after reading Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu’s acclaimed book, Countering The Conspiracy to Destroy Black Boys, he enrolled at Lincoln Land Community College earning an Associate’s Degree in Elementary Education.  Following graduation, he worked as a Teacher’s Aide in District 186 and founded, The House of Men for Education (a non-profit organization whose mission was to attack the “fourth grade failure syndrome”).  Robert was 30 years old.

With an unquenched thirst for knowledge, and following a seven year respite from college, he enrolled at the University of Illinois (UIS), earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work. Robert worked as a Case-Manager and became a Foster Care Provider. Finding his calling in serving his community, Robert continues to self-actualize through his devotion to family, service to others, pursuit of even higher education, and soulful poetry.  Robert returned to UIS to pursue a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. Further, Robert released his first book of poetry, Released, Inspired Poetic Messages.

Robert is currently working on a Children’s Book, The Search (For The Prodigious Son) and his second book of poetry, Black Rage and Responsible Revolution (The Poetic Plea!)

I crossed paths with Mel while doing my own book promo, I never once thought ‘Mel’ would be …well, Mel. I imagined it be Melanie! How cool to have Nolan back, I interviewed him earlier this year. You can read his full interview here.   Nolan  was born and raised in Queens, NY.  He relocated to Atlanta in 1995.  He enjoys watching sports, playing pool and going to the gym.   He also enjoys service on Sundays and co-hosting the radio show Level Up.

Nolan has been writing poetry for a number of years from discussions I’ve had with him, he also has a tattoo dedicated to his name, “Mr. Scribe” how cool!

“This book is a surprise to me. About two and half years ago I wrote a poem to a friend. Got a positive response so I continued writing. Over that time my life has come full circle. Getting back to building a relationship with God, renewing the bond with my children has started a fire to pen “scribes.” I have discovered a way of expressing myself that people can relate and feel. Meet The Author

Luke Murphy is the International bestselling author of two series. The Calvin Watters Mysteries: Dead Man’s Hand (2012) and Wild Card (2017). The Charlene Taylor Mysteries: Kiss & Tell (2015) and Rock-A-Bye Baby (2019).

Murphy played six years of professional hockey before retiring in 2006.

His sports column, “Overtime” (Pontiac Equity), was nominated for the 2007 Best Sports Page in Quebec, and won the award in 2009. He has also worked as a radio journalist (CHIPFM 101.7).

Murphy lives in Shawville, QC with his wife and three daughters. He is a teacher who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing, and a Bachelor of Education (Magna Cum Laude).

Happy Sunday, let’s get to know a male author of colour #2 it’s poetry author, Author Jackson.   He is a father and  has published two books of heart-felt poetry. Born June 30, 1981 in Lafayette, Louisiana to Lenora J. Wilson and Allen Joseph, raised in Crowley, Louisiana. Over 20 years he has been writing poetry and recently published his first book, The Heart of a Man Behind The Walls. Now he has published his second book, part 2 to the first book he wrote.

I must say this is a very interesting group of authors to get to know, we’ll have book giveaways, fun facts, learn a bit about what they’ve published and a chance to visit the pages of a book they wish to share with us.

It’s important to remember that male authors need to be heard, in particular male authors who identify as a man of colour, regardless of his descent. In the lit world sadly these voices are sometimes shaded and overlooked.  It’s also important to remember, while urban and street lit genres have a massive market and readership, this is not all male authors of colour can and do write. You’ll see this hopefully as we move through the genres. Personally, I’m looking very forward to this genre as a romance author  and massive reader myself, I love male romance authors! I have read a few and really enjoyed the male POV on love and life. I’m also massive non-fiction reader, and poetry is just so special! It’s going to be an exciting week.

So in honour of #BlackLivesMatter , #BlackLivesMatterUK and #BlackAuthorsMatter let’s elevate, lift and express some interest in male authors of colour. Tomorrow we will kick off with author #1 and #2, then each day as we move through July, continue through the genres of this live up of thirty men I have for you to get to know.
