blendedfamilies - my review

I picked up the book off Netgalley as I just love these kind of esoteric subjects, and yes I have been able to read my own aura by using my hand in the past.  It’s not a new subject to me, but there’s always more to learn and understand. In fact, I have never really read more on the subject of auras, than what I found on small blog posts on esoteric websites I follow. The first thing to say is, this book is visually to die for, the illustrations are beautiful, diverse, and feature people from all over the world. There are so many ethnic pictures it is just adorable to look at. Apart from the stunning visual I found as a reader, that the author is very down to earth, uses everyday language, very detailed, and makes the whole subject matter of ‘auras’ we give off as people 1. interesting 2. fun 3. very practical in ‘how to’ actually read someone’s aura, or your own.

The book also covers a lot of reference to the body’s chakra system, therefore it gives additional learning and deeper understanding. It also covers why we have auras, where they come from, the different types and so many other cool things.

One statement that the author makes is that, ‘we give off an aura before we even say anything, shake hands etc.’ ‘ Vibes don’t lie.’ I totally agree with her, I have always felt this way. The author is very relatable in her style of delivery.

Overall, I give Understanding Auras 5 plus wonderful stars, the level of detail, ease of reading, and general enjoyment for me was off the scale! I recommend it to all those who enjoy spirituality and esoteric subjects. I can’t wait for my hardback to arrive it will sit very proudly on my bookshelf for ‘woo woo’ subjects LOL. I thank Netgalley and the author again for the preview.

Hot New Mystery by Jo A. Hiestand Just .99 Cent + $25.00 giveaway!

Hide and Seek
The McLaren Mysteries Book 12
by Jo A. Hiestand
Genre: Mystery

Playing a mystery game seems the perfect way to celebrate Jamie Kydd’s promotion to Detective Sergeant rank. But the game turns real when a body turns up in the pretend crime scene. Perhaps worse than spoiling the party, the corpse is someone Jamie knows.
Even though the police take on the case, Jamie asks his friend, former police detective Michael McLaren, to also investigate—concerned that the victim’s criminal past may dampen the Constabulary’s usual fervor to nab his killer. It seems to have been a smart decision, for the police aren’t expending a lot of energy on the inquiry.
Suspects float around McLaren…half truthful, hard to find. More like wraiths than flesh and blood. If the victim’s burglary partner, ex-wife, or childhood friend didn’t kill Dan, who did? It’s a desperate game between McLaren and a killer who’s playing Hide and Seek.

Books, Girl Scouts and music filled Jo A. Hiestand’s childhood. She discovered the magic of words and the worlds they create: mysteries, English medieval history, the natural world. She explored the joys of the outdoors through Girl Scout camping trips and summers as a canoeing instructor and camp counselor. Brought up on classical, big band and baroque music, she was groomed as a concert pianist until forsaking the piano for the harpsichord. She also plays guitar and has sung in a semi-professional folkgroup in the US and as a soloist in England.
This mixture formed the foundation for her writing. A true Anglophile, Jo wanted to create a mystery series that featured a British police detective who left the Force over an injustice and now investigates cold cases on his own. The result is the McLaren Mysteries, featuring ex-police detective Michael McLaren. Jo’s insistence for accuracy — from police methods and location layout to the general feel of the area — has driven her innumerable times to Derbyshire. These explorations and conferences with police friends provide the detail filling the books. She also writes the amateur sleuth Linn House Mysteries under the pen name Jessie McAlan. In 1999 Jo returned to Webster University to major in English. She graduated in 2001 with a BA degree and departmental honors.
She has employed her love of writing, board games and music in other ways by co-inventing a mystery-solving game, P.I.R.A.T.E.S., which uses maps, graphics, song lyrics, and other clues to lead the players to the lost treasure. Jo founded the Greater St. Louis Chapter of Sisters in Crime, serving as its first president. Besides her love of mysteries and early music, she also enjoys photography, reading, baking, and her backyard wildlife. Her cat, Tennyson, shares her St. Louis home.

Justice for #BreonnaTaylor #StandWithBre

It really doesn’t matter whether you’re black, white, or any other race it’s pretty clear when we look at the handling of Breonna Taylor’s tragic death at the hands of the police, there has been a clear miscarriage of justice. The outcome that we’ve all learned about this week is pretty sickening– in my personal view. After George Floyd and Rayshard Brook this is a slap in the face. This morning something very strange happened to me, I actually shared the full event as a Facebook post. Basically before I got out of bed as I always do on a Sunday and most other days I closed my eyes and asked the Universe and myself ‘what’s the focus this week, where should I place my energy?’ Breonna Taylor’s face and this picture that I always see came to my mind’s eye, as clear as day. I then said to myself ‘what?’ Along came the word ‘petition.’

Weird! I journalled about it in my diary, it was a very strange experience for this to be placed in my mind’s eye. Then I did some online research around the case. Last week the editor of Aspiring Author Magazine LLC asked me for the October edition to focus on Black History month in the UK, when I submit my articles for October. I’ll also be adding something in to support Breonna Taylor’s online petitions for justice also, following what happened this morning!

I have signed these two as the concerns that the petitions express, also reflect the same concerns I have around the handling of her case, her death, the police involvement, laws, and the overall outcome. If you see the miscarriage of justice please sign and support her. #StandWithBre

About Breonna

As a full-time EMT for two hospitals in Louisville, Kentucky, Breonna Taylor was a beloved and respected essential worker during the coronavirus pandemic. That police brutality killed her, and not the virus, is a painful reflection of the state of America.

A loving daughter, caring sister, and a kind and giving friend throughout her short life, she had a servant’s heart and dedicated her entire life to helping people.

Breonna and her hard-working family moved to Louisville, Kentucky 12 years ago looking for a better life together. They found better jobs, a welcoming community, good schools, and were happy to call Louisville their home.

Breonna was always caring and thoughtful of others. At an early age she decided to dedicate her time to helping people. She worked with children with disabilities right after she graduated high school and spent the last several years working as an Emergency Medical Technician as she prepared to become a full-time nurse.

As proud as her family was of the good she did, they were concerned by the risks she faced serving patients impacted by the coronavirus. As an employee of not just one but two medical centers, she was living out her dream of serving others. She was truly on the front lines of the pandemic response, risking her own life every day to protect the community that she had come to love, and that loved her.

About the case / March 13, 2020

Around 1 a.m. on March 13, while Breonna was asleep in her own bed, a rogue, renegade task force of three white male Louisville Metro Police officers with questionable records known as the Crime Interdiction Division gathered silently outside and crept through her apartment complex in the dead of night. Not a single member of the community saw or heard them. They were dressed in plain clothes and never announced themselves or knocked on Breonna’s door.

When they arrived at Breonna’s apartment, they broke the door down, burst into her home, and in a matter of seconds, they opened fire, taking Breonna’s life. The police were so wildly irresponsible and reckless, that their bullets were found in three different apartments. In total, they fired their weapons dozens of times, hitting Breonna at least 8 times, likely more. The local funeral home told the family that her body was riddled with bullets.

The officers would later claim that they had an arrest warrant, and were executing a drug raid, and they only opened fire in self-defense.

Breonna’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, who is an upstanding citizen and is beloved by Breonna’s family, was also home asleep at the time and did indeed fire on one of the police officers during the raid, but only because he thought he and Breonna were experiencing an armed robbery. The officers did not announce themselves before entering, and they were not in uniform. Kenneth actually called the police himself, assuming they were experiencing a dangerous break-in.

No drugs were found at the scene. Breonna was not a suspect. Instead of holding the officers involved accountable, the police arrested Kenneth Walker, a licensed gun owner who was merely defending himself and his family.

The LMPD officers responsible for Breonna’s murder are John Mattingly, Brett Hankison, and Myles Cosgrove.

Attorney General Daniel Cameron just announced that the grand jury failed to indict any of the officers for Breonna Taylor’s death, and that they would indict only Officer Brett Hankison with shots fired into other apartments during this senseless killing.

Not only were these officers at the wrong home, in the wrong apartment complex, and in the wrong neighborhood, the man they were looking for had already been arrested by their department early that day.

Book Review: Doctor House Plant (Hobbies/Garden) 5 Wonderful Stars! #DoctorHouseplant #NetGalley

Dr house plantThank you to Netgalley for my free copy, in exchange for an honest review. Never in my life have I ever picked up a book on plants, indoor, or outdoor gardening but I’m so glad I read this one.  I had a nice afternoon flicking through it. I think this would make a wonderful gift for my mum, and I’d love to buy a hardback. I just adore houseplants.

Book Review: Moon Baths : Bathing Rituals and Recipes for Relaxation and Vitality 3 Wonderful stars.( Self-help) #MoonBath #NetGalley

Thank you to Netgallery for the information on this book, as other reviewers mentioned, when I tried to download my review copy it wouldn’t work. However the blurb sounded fantastic to me, I was convinced after reading it that ‘this is one for the bookshelf.’  I pre-ordered a copy and waited patiently. It arrived, I read, had a lovely bath last Sunday during this month’s new Moon in Virgo! But… and there is a but, I found that this book could be improved slightly in my honest opinion, but I do like it. And would still recommend it.

3 Lovely, But Room For Improvement Stars

First thing to say is, this is a visually stunning book, it screams luxury the pages, hardback, colours, everything about it. I really love all of this. I also love how the book is organised into seasons. So each month we have a new, waxing, full, and then waning moon– the moon’s natural cycle. Within the book there is a special bath tea ( tea to add to your bath water), with herbs and lovely essential oils for each moon during the spring, summer, winter and autumn months– love this! I also really love the pictures the authors used, and the writing prompts for each moon/season and bath.

On the other hand, while I expected all of this wonderful stuff to read, and loved all the information what I found was that:

  1. A lot of the herbs used to make your ‘tea’ to add for your bath can’t be sourced very easily at the local supermarket, or herb store. Just by reading them I could see that, without even heading out.  Now if you are someone that knows or has an interest in herbs ( like me) you can reach for other resources, and use alternatives. But, really this should not be the case. This is where I feel the book has room for improvement, it’s not very suitable for everyone in that respect. And some may even feel they need to search the internet, import these herbs/flowers etc and go through a lot of expense. I feel that overall the herbs should be easily accessible– all of them. In each of the sixteen rituals I could pick out herbs that would not be in the food aisle, sadly.
  2. The authors really do explain well how the different moon phases can cause us to feel, as people Eg reflective, creative, etc. However, here is room for improvement too. How about explain the moon’s phases in more detail, for those who don’t know the difference between a waxing and waning moon for example. Some readers ( myself included) do, but  some or even many may not. There’s major room for improvement here to educate readers further.
  3. The herbs themselves– why are we using them? Again if you’re not someone who is familiar with all of them that the authors recommend to use in your bath, where is the extra education for readers? I would have love to know WHY the authors settled on the herbs they recommended for a waxing moon in the summer for example, compared to a waxing moon in the winter? Clearly there’s a difference what is it? As I don’t know and would love to!

As mentioned, last weekend I did look at the bath tea recommended for an autumn new Moon, and take a lovely bath. However, I did replace the raspberry leaves for raspberry herbal tea  I had at home LOL. So, you can see that in some months you may need to use alternatives. It  would have been lovely if the authors recommended herbs that allow ease of use, for more people. Generally, this is a beautiful book, and a stunning concept simply boiling herbs, water, flowers and in some cases fruit with hot water on a stove, tip it into your bath water, have a nice relaxing bath with it with candles and music etc, then reflect in your journal at key points in the month, based on the moon’s phase. However, there is a lot of room for improvement to enhance the average reader’s experience, learning, and connection with WHY they are using what they are using, and WHAT the moon’s actual energy is! I realise the latter is moving into the astrology realm, but it’s not hard to explain the differences between the moon’s phases for those who may not know. For me, it was worth the buy straight away without the free review copy, as I do like the book and can fill in the gaps. Readers who can’t may not get as much out of the book as they hoped, especially if the herbs for the bath teas are hard to find, which is the main concept of the box ‘tea baths’. Three stars from me, but I do love it and recommend it even to have on the shelf and look at it’s stunning. I will take more baths using the recipes  as in all honesty my house smelt amazing!  I felt like some kind of Goddess when I got out the bath, so thanks! Give it a try if you like the concept of a relaxing bath, some you time and relaxation.

Good News: New Ventures as an Associate Editor Starts This Week!

TL

I was yet to come across a publishing house, with a literary magazine that’s purely dedicated to the romance genre. That was until recently Tallon Lake seem to be it, and I can’t believe my application was successful for the Associate Editor’s role! I submitted Sacrifices which is published on the 30th of this month, for consideration to be featured and saw the advert for the role. On the off chance I asked about the job, and what it’s all about. I really liked the sound of it so I applied, as of this week I landed the job to my surprise. Here’s a bit about the Tallon Lake:

Tallon Lake

Tallon Lake (TL) is a digital quarterly literary magazine that specializes in romance short fiction, poetry, and art. It represents the specific subgenres of contemporary, historical, and paranormal. Within these subgenres, various romance relationship levels will be explored, from insta-love to slow-burn and from innocent struggle to closed door. TL focuses on the relationship and its struggle, character development, and sensuality. The magazine does not print sexuality explicit content.

One goal of the magazine is to open opportunities for diverse voices, providing inclusivity. This means that the editor welcomes content from all writers, poets, and artists, including BIPOC,  LGBTQ, and international creatives. Another goal of the magazine is to pamper readers and to help them escape into a much safer, warmer environment – far away from the harsh reality of today’s stress-filled world, one page at a time. The last goal of the magazine is to give back to the community. Each quarter, the editing staff will select a charity that benefits critical social issues — like mental helath awareness, human trafficking, child abuse, homelessness, and addiction — and gift 10% of its sales to help create a better world for all.

Tallon Lake isn’t just a magazine… it’s a legecy of good will, entertainment, and positive energy.

To learn more about the people behind TL, see TL Staff.

What’s An Associate Editor’s Role?

Well I’ll read the submissions that come in from writers, then agree with the team which stories are a good fit for us. Then, it’s my job to work with authors who receive conditional publishing contracts, covering the editorial side of things, before the publication of their work in a nutshell.

Am I excited? You bet! The first magazine is published on my birthday in February. (That’s fate LOL). I really look forward to this role, it’s the second editorial role I’ve had.  My last one I enjoyed for a current affairs magazine, it’s just a shame the founder let the project go. I have faith that Tallon Lake as a publishing house and literary magazine will do great things! Plus, it’s the genre I love to read and write (other than thriller), it’s a dream job really.

Also, Tallon Lake’s main focus is to publish marginalised voices, this I am all about and I love that. This was a massive selling point for me when I decided to apply.  BIPOC ( Black, Indigenous, People of Colour), and LGBTQ stories and writers are sooooooooooooo welcome at this small press! I look forward to reading  what comes in. Note that BDSM and erotica genres are not accepted by Tallon Lake.

Do You Love Reading Romance Like Me?

Right now, the team are preparing to publish the February issue, there will be a preview copy available this November. If you’d love to grab a preview then just check out https://www.tallonlakemag.com/  and add yourself to the newsletter. There will be NO spam or unnecessary emails, don’t worry. You’ll be notified when the preview is ready!

Does This Mean I’ll Stop Writing?

Hell-to-the-no! Writing is my first love, you can make a writer an editor, but I don’t think you can convert or convince a true writer (who loves it) to give up that part for pure editorial work. Well, at least not in my case! I will be writing my romantic suspense stories and thrillers/mysteries just like normal. In fact my focus is my series of mysteries I shared the covers for last week. That will not stop. You might be thinking, ‘so why are you doing this?’ To be honest, I love magazine work,  and I love reading too. I always have and it’s even better when it’s focused on things I feel passionate about, be it current affairs or the genre I write in. Plus, this is so exciting I am yet to really see a romance only focused literary magazine, so why the hell not!? I’d read it even if I never had the role, if there’s a chance to be part of it even better.  I may enjoy it it’s worth a try!

I’ll keep you guys updated on what we’re working on, but in the mean time feel free to check out Tallon Lake here: https://www.tallonlakemag.com/

Kim’s Review: Love’s Ride – 3 Stars

Thank you to Silver Dagger Tours for my free copy in exchange for an honest review, all reviews are my own. For me, this was a very sweet, clean romance and a quick read. The characters were like-able and well crafted. I really enjoyed the start of the short story, without giving away spoilers the main ‘struggle’ is around cheating, and how the main characters get over it. Firstly, I found the reason for cheating believable, but I would have liked if the point of view of both characters following the ‘struggle’, and cheating when it came to light, were more developed. Then maybe I could have been gripped by the story between them more. A simple hug, kiss, and prayer smoothed everything over at the end. For me as a reader to make it more realistic I would have liked more spice, reality, or drama! Overall this is a sweet, clean, and christian romance, if you like sweet reads, christian reads, less dramatic romance I recommend it. For me it was an okay and enjoyable read, I didn’t read part two, however it was a good introduction to the author’s style of romance.

Another writing contest led to his award-winning one-act play “A Good Kid,” which, in turn kicked off a series of related one-acts which were eventually rolled into his first full-length stage effort, A JERSEY CANTATA.

And yet again, a writing contest brought him his first published credit, the critically-acclaimed WW II drama, THE ADVOCATE. Since then, he has turned out a range of work from academic studies to literary short fiction and including several well-received sequels to THE ADVOCATE.

From 2010 to 2017, he was an adjunct instructor at several colleges and universities in New Jersey. He now teaches screenwriting at the University of Maine at Farmington.
