Kim’s Review 3 Stars
Thank you to Silver Dagger Book Tours for my free copy, in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own as a reader. The book’s blurb doesn’t give away much! It’s a bit of a mystery and that’s what pulled me in. This was an interesting read I got into it quickly, I started to enjoy the plot from the start. It’s very clever the way it weaves together, and the characters are very different and enjoyable overall.
Characters- I liked them (they’re not meant to be like-able people), as the people who end up in the house are there based on their past. But I liked them! I would have loved if I was able to connect with them more, by their personal POVs and maybe less narrative from the author, but I did enjoy them even if I would have loved if I felt what they felt, and heard their terrible motives for what they did from the character’s POV bit more.
The plot- is very clever I couldn’t work out how it would all pan out. Without giving spoilers away we follow the story of a handful of people, (with a past), who all end up at the ‘house of redemption’. They all think they’re there for some kind of vacation, that’s relevant to their backstory. They then need to work out why they’re there, how to get out, and who is really behind it all once they realise it’s a set up. I never guessed the twists in the plot and it held my interest. I liked the cleverness of it.
However I settled on three stars ‘an okay read’ in terms of my enjoyment overall because, this book has been out a number of years (2013), in all honesty it was hard to enjoy to the maximum because of the lack of good editing and formatting all through out. It distracted me, sadly with not just the odd typo here or there which is nothing major and would never normally distract me at all! So overall, I enjoyed the cleverness, plot, but it was a little hard to focus on the story at times due to the editing. Would I read more from the author? Yes I would – a well edited book, especially if it’s been out a while. Three stars for an interesting, unusual and clever story from me.
